That concludes out live coverage of the Socceroos' knock out clash against Argentina.

They were valiant, but it was not enough against a side that could go on to win the World Cup.

The Socceroos did a nation proud.

The Socceroos are out of the World Cup after a brave late fightback fell just short against the might of Lionel Messi's Argentina.

Messi scored a magical opening goal to lead his side to a 2-1 win, but Australia gave as good as they got in a rollercoaster second half, piling on the pressure after profiting from a huge slice of luck when Craig Goodwin's 77th minute strike copped a wicked deflection into the goal.

That lit a fire under Craig Arnold's side, spurring them to their best period of the contest and almost squaring it, with an Aziz Behich 80th minute shot blocked from just outside the six yard box after he had beaten two Argentina defenders in a mazy run through the heart of their defence.

Socceroos great Mark Bosnich has lauded the efforts of the Socceroos against Argentina.

"That's the most courageous Socceroos performance I've ever witnessed. It was outstanding," he said on SBS post-game coverage.

"They not only stayed in the fight but put Argentina under so much pressure."

With under a minute to go, Garang Kuol had a golden opportunity to equalise for the Socceroos, but only a outrageously good save from Emiliano Martínez kept it out of the net.

"I can see it on the (Argentine) players' faces - they know how hard they were pushed," Bosnich said.

"They would have thought at 2-0, 'we're cruising'. 

"But one thing Graham Arnold … (has) instilled in this squad is a self-belief and a confidence that they are going to stay in the fight no matter what.

"In the end, it was one piece of brilliance and an unfortunate mistake, or else we would be sat here talking about extra time."

"This is an outstanding tournament. They can really feel … they have inspired a new generation, like the 2006 Socceroos inspired them perhaps when they were youngsters.

"They've done so well and we're very, very proud of them."

Craig Foster said the Socceroos' performance would only allow them to grow in coming years.

"There's so much for us to learn from this - we'll reflect on the tournament after everything that has occurred here and how we build going forward. 

"For the moment, the greatest compliments possible to everyone on that bench, everyone on the field, this entire group, for what you have done.

"You have pushed the potential world champions here and twice former champions - and one of the greatest players in the world - you have pushed them to the limit. 

"And that's what we expect from you. That's what we expect from Australia.

"When that ball went in from Craig Goodwin, everyone around the country watching, in all of the live sites, at home, they knew that this team believed.

"That's a moment that we'll cherish for a long time."

Oh!! Garang Kuol just came oh so close to becoming a hero for the Socceroos, but it was not to be.

In the final minute, he had a fantastic opportunity that was only kept out by a sensational save.

"That was the opportunity. For a young man looking to make his mark and what a chance for Australia," David Basheer said.

Luke Wilkshire agreed.

"That was the moment for Garang Kuol. A fantastic first touch. Then Martinez spreads himself, makes the save. When a moment. What a chance," he said.

"A fantastic tournament from the Socceroos. Bitterly disappointed. Potentially could have got more out of that last chance, but they've done the nation proud.

"I'm proud to be an Australian and represented in the World Cup, on the biggest stage in football, in sport, (they've) done themselves and the nation proud."

The Socceroos are obviously pressing high chasing a late goal and it means they're vulnerable at the back.

Leo Messi just came within millimetres of scoring his second for the night.

Less than three minutes left.

Luke Wilkshire said they needed a spark, well here it is.

The ball was loose out the back of the box and it was Craig Goodwin who stepped up. From 25 yards out the shot was probably going over the top, but it took a deflection off Lisandro Martinez and wrong-footed the keeper.

"And there's still hope. It took a wicked deflection. But Australia won't mind that. And the Socceroos are back and there's a chance," David Basheer said.

"There's the spark we needed. Opportunity, ball not cleared properly. It falls to Goodwin on his left foot. Probably handball. Probably going over. It goes into the back of the net for Australia. Can this be a turning point?," Wilkshire said.

It's getting to that point now.

Graham Arnold has just made a raft of changes.

Mathew Leckie came off for Garang Kuol, Mitch Duke off for Jamie Maclaren and Milos Degenek for Fran Karacic.

"We're just looking for that spark. It's gone a little bit flat," Luke Wilkshire said.

"We need to try and create (something). 15 minutes to try and get back into this game."
