The breakthrough finally comes

Ryan Rickelton has opened the gate now for Australia.

Wiaan Mulder reverse swept a Marnus Labuschagne delivery straight to Josh Inglis and Rickelton ran straight away from the other end.

But he was sent back and caught well short of his crease.

Marnus is fired up and so are the Aussies.

Rickelton makes it a ton!

Lachlan Harper

Ryan Rickelton is taking this match away from Australia and now he has a ton!

He took the gloves off Kyle Verreyne after the first Test and he’s made the most of his spot with a vital century.

Australia is out of answers now but how will Temba Bavuma play this in terms of a declaration?

That’s over and tea

Marnus Labuschagne bowls the final over, which included a warning for following through on the pitch.

Ryan Rickelton is on 83 and Wiaan Mulder has 46. What can Australia do next? Will South Africa eye off a declaration?

Aussies looking to the part-timers

Travis Head’s into the attack now with Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder’s partnership going past 100.

“It’s starting to get out of hand for Australia,” commentator Corbin Middlemas said on ABC Sport.

And now Marnus Labuschagne is going to roll out leg-spinners. Desperation station for Australia.

Tea not far away.

Aussies struggle to authority

Phil Jacques says on ABC Sport this match is “slipping away” from Australia as they become desperate for a wicket.

The lead is now 169 and Australia will really need Nathan Lyon to produce a vintage bowling performance here.

Matt Renshaw is currently bowling his part-time off-spinners.

Who will blink first?

Lachlan Harper

We’re in a standoff right now.

It’s Nathan Lyon up against Wiaan Mulder and Ryan Rickelton and you get the sense this is either a century or a wicket away from changing the match.

But then there’s also Marco Jansen to come in next. He could change the game very quickly.

Rickelton’s on 74 and the lead is 167. Anything over 200 is a real danger zone now.

Starc strikes … Rickelton on the finger

Damien McCartney

Riley Rickelton has just worn one on the finger, and ouch that would have hurt.

Starc dug one in short, and it quickly got big on the Proteas No.5, who also got smoked in the first innings too. His index finger is strapped as a result.

He actually played this rising ball really well. He followed it the whole way, and was just unlucky he didn't get bat on it.

He shook it off a couple of times but otherwise looks OK -- he didn't even ask for the physio or doctor.

Nathan Lyon has now come back into the attack.

Advantage Proteas with new ball

Damien McCartney

South Africa have certainly made the most of this new, hard ball so far.

The new ball rejuvenates the bowlers, but the hardness and pace with which the ball comes onto the bat also gives the batters a golden opportunity to score quick runs easier.

And this pitch is starting to resemble the Stuart Highway that runs up the guys of Australia from Darwin to Port Augusta.

Starc and Hazlewood are giving the ball every opportunity to do something, but it's just … not.

That said, there are puffs of dust starting to appear off the wicket when the ball pitches so she's starting to break up, which isn't good for the Aussies…

New ball!

Damien McCartney

We remember what happened the last time Mitchell Starc got a hold of the second new ball – he took four wickets in about nine balls.

He bowled one ball with the old ball, and then took the newie.

The last couple of overs before this new ball was taken were a bit expensive – Rilety Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder put a couple away. Mulder even belted Lyon into the stands.

Unfortunately, the first ball with the new pill has gone for four leg byes...

Back underway

Play has resumed at Cape Town, and Matthew Renshaw and Nathan Lyon are trying to quickly get through a couple of overs before the new ball becomes available.

Both look threatening though, so a wicket with the old ball would be perfect.
