Todd Murphy was instilled as Nathan Lyon's understudy when dealt his Test debut in India this week.

But on an incredible second day of the series-opener on Friday, it was the youngster with glasses — not the veteran with more than 400 Test wickets in the bag — who piloted Australia in Nagpur, albeit on a strugglesome day.

The 22-year-old Murphy, handed a baggy green after playing just seven first-class games, captured a five-wicket haul.

Well that was a long day in the field for Australia.

After rolling through the Aussies on day one for just 177, the hosts came out on day two and have gone a long way towards batting Australia out of the game.

Rohit Sharma's century was sensational, and Ravi Jadeja has backed up his five-for yesterday with an unbeaten 66 on day two.

No.9 Axar Patel's 52 not out will be nothing but demoralising for Australia. None of the Aussie batters made fifty, yet here's India's theoretical third-worst batter digging in and grinding out an innings.

For Australia, there are few highlights.

But far and away the brightest is the arrival of Todd Murphy. Even with conditions that are spin friendly, picking up five in an innings on debut is no mean feat.

He was tight, and posed questions with every ball he delivered.

He bowled 36 overs - many in tandem with Nathan Lyon (who was seriously unlucky to have only the one wicket to his name) - with an economy of just 2.28.

Australia has a star on their hands.

It was definitely a day to forget for Steve Smith though - he spilled one chance earlier in the day, and then another in the very last over when his mind looked to have been on the hot shower and dinner waiting for him back in the team hotel.

It's hard to see how Australia can come back from this position and win this Test match, but if they are any chance to do that, they must take all three remaining wickets in the first half-hour tomorrow, and then make it to lunch unharmed.

Considering both openers spectacularly failed in the first innings, that could be a tall order.

Steve Smith has had a day to forget in the field.

We're inside the final 20 minutes of day two in this first test. It's advantage India.

With three wickets in hand, a lead of at least 150 would have to be par for the home side.

It currently stands at 115 with just a few overs remaining in the day.

Todd Murphy has been the standout, but pace bowling really hasn't done the job despite the new ball.

With every run, Australia's hopes dwindle. We saw what India could do in the first innings so a win by an innings is definitely a realistic proposition.

India continue to control proceedings.

They now lead by more than 100 runs on what's the final session of day two.

Axar Patel has 22 runs to his name while Ravindra Jadeja has made it to 57.

Australia are desperately in need of a wicket. They'll be right into the tail if they can dethrone one of these two men.

This partnership is up to 42. India are 7/282.

That's a half-century for Ravindra Jadeja.

It's been one helluva match for the all-rounder, who took five wickets on day one.

Jadeja brings up 50 with a single. The trademark wave of the bat follows, flashing it like a sword.

That takes India's lead out to 79 runs. They are 7-257.

After Australia opted to take the new ball immediately, Steve Smith dropped skipper and century-maker Rohit Sharma with the fourth delivery of the 80th over.

But as Australia's vice-captain shook his head in the slips cordon, Cummins ensured Sharma took no advantage of the chance he was gifted, castling the opener with the next ball.

Cummins speared the ball into the right-handed Sharma and jagged it off the seam, the red leather crashing into off stump as Sharma departed for a magnificent 120.

"The most relieved man on the ground is Steve Smith, who just put that catch down the previous delivery," Mark Waugh said on the Fox Cricket coverage.

"It's a very, very good bit of bowling.

"Puts to an end a tremendous innings, maybe a match-winning innings for India."

The Indians are 6-229 as Srikar Bharat walks to the middle to join Ravindra Jadeja.
