Landmark BBL move confirmed as privatisation begins

Cricket Australia have confirmed their plans to move towards privatisation for the Big Bash League, starting with the Melbourne Renegades.
After months of speculation, the sport’s governing body announced the decision on Tuesday afternoon, with the Renegades going up for sale.

The plan is for the Victorian-based franchise to play the 2027/28 season under new ownership, meaning they will stay as is for the upcoming summer.
Pending the outcome of the Renegades’ private sale process, CA will then look at expanding that throughout the competition under a self-determination model.
“Cricket Australia and its state members are united in our commitment to investing in and growing the BBL and WBBL, and to advancing the interests of cricket at every level,” CA chairman Mike Baird said in a statement.
“By opening the door to private investment, Cricket Australia is taking a deliberate step to strengthen and secure the long-term future of the game, accelerate growth and ensuring we can keep investing in community cricket and grassroots participation, domestic and international pathways and the elite level.
“Beginning the sales process for the Renegades allows us to take the first step in a self-determination model for our members and represents a defining moment.
“Importantly, CA and its members will maintain control over the most significant aspects of Australian cricket operations, including international scheduling, player availability, salary caps, branding proposals as well as the reserve price for a licence to operate that must be achieved, and approval of investors.
“This is a significant decision that has involved an enormous amount of analysis, discussion and collaboration over many months. I’d like to thank all involved as we move to what we believe is the best way to secure cricket’s future in this country, strengthen the Big Bash and protect our standing on the global stage.”
Cricket Victoria director Shaun Richardson welcomed the decision and believes it will benefit the long-term future of the franchise.

“The sales process allows prospective parties to express their interest in purchasing the Melbourne Renegades and demonstrate why they would be the right fit for Victorian cricket.
“There’s a clear level of interest both locally and internationally, and we’re committed to working alongside Cricket Australia to identify a partner who shares our ambition for cricket in Victoria.
“Private investment will unlock value for reinvestment across Victorian cricket, from the grassroots through to the elite game.”
During their 15 seasons in the competition, the Renegades have won the title just once, defeating cross-town rivals the Melbourne Stars in BBL|08.
