Darwin Test recap: Starc in heated clash with rival as frustration grows

Marnus Labuschagne bowls the final delivery of day two and it’s DROPPED.

Mahmud cut a short ball to gully and Green has dropped a low chance.

Bangladesh finish 6-351.

Marnus Labuschagne has the ball in hand now and is bowling pace.

First ball is of course ... a bouncer.

Some back-and-forth going on between Starc and Mehidy.

Starc’s follow through had led to Mehidy running down the pitch while trying to go for a run.

The left-hander had some choice words for his rival as the umpire spoke to both of them.

“It’s my follow through, not your follow through. Get off the wicket,” he said.

Frustrations starting to show for Australia after a long day in the field.

“Not in Bangladesh now,” Starc said to Mehidy at the end of his over.

Despite conditions looking good for batting, Ricky Ponting thinks the Aussie batters won’t be calm.

“I think the overriding feeling will be nervous ... this is a game that everyone expected they’d steamroll Bangladesh,” he said on Seven.

“Right now they are behind the eight-ball and a couple of top order batters are already under pressure. There’s probably no bigger moment in their careers than what’s coming up the next few days.

“142 runs so far, it’s a long way behind in a Test ... we’re going to get a really good understanding of the mindset and quality and skill of this Australian batting order.”

Umpire Richard Illingworth has just made a cracking decision.

Hasan went back in defence and his bat brushed his pad right as the ball passed the bat. Alex Carey went up, although Nathan Lyon wasn’t interested.

The Aussies reviewed the decision, and snicko showed the bat clearly brushed the pad only a couple of frames before the ball squeezed past the bat. It would have been very easy for Illingworth to raise the finger, and given Hasan flicked his own pad, he may or may not have reviewed the decision.

These two have now survived more than 10 overs, and the sting has certainly come out of the new ball.

Well after that flurry of wickets, things have just settled down somewhat.

Hasan and Mehidy look to be really knuckling down and protecting their wicket. There is still some variable bounce and sideways movement, but they haven’t been tempted to dangle the bat at anything outside off-stump like some of the others were.

Nathan Lyon has now returned to the attack, as has Cam Green down the other end. There’s still an hour left in play, and the Aussies would dearly love to knock Bangladesh over this evening.

If they can do that and keep the lead to 150 or so, the Aussies will feel as if they’re still in this Test.

AND ANOTHER! Where has this been all day?

With the third ball of his new spell, Cummins gets the wicket, and it’s gone to Smith at second slip AGAIN!

The established batter Mushfiqur Rahim is the man out. It was a weird one -- it looked as if he went to play it, and as the ball pitched he tried to back out of it, but it was too late. The ball leapt off the pitch, took the edge up towards the shoulder and flew to Smith.

Smith’s reaction suggested it nearly did him in too – he leapt through the air and took a half-diving catch, and then gestured afterwards that it was wobbling through the air.

At the fall of that wicket, the Aussies had taken 3-11 from the previous 24 deliveries.

The Tigers batters are playing with doughnuts at the moment – all edge. A majority of the runs since the new ball have been scored from edges that have gone past the cordon.

Two new batters at the crease now and the Aussies can sense an opportunity now to quickly wrap this innings up.

AND ANOTHER ONE!

Mitch Starc has this one, and it’s almost a mirror image of the Shanto wicket.

It’s Das, out for a duck, caught by Smith at second slip after he went fishing outside off stump. There wasn’t much footwork involved, and the angle across the right-hander from the left-handed Starc, it was all he could do to nick it through to Smith, who made no mistake.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz is the new batter in, and Starc throws a hooping full one at his feet first ball, and he did well to get some bac on it.

A replay in between overs showed Starc set Das up beautifully. Four balls angled in at him, and then the fifth angled out did him in.

Top-quality Test bowling there.

Cummins has now brought himself on down the other end.

It’s ’bout bloody time.

Hazlewood has done the job, and it’s Shanto trudging back to the pavilion for 84, having edged to Steve Smith at second slip who took a comfortable catch.

“Finally,” Brendon Julian said in commentary for Fox Sports.

“Brilliant innings … getting a standing ovation from the Bangladesh fans,” Kerry O’Keeffe added.

Australia have their foot in the door, but Litton Das can bat too. They need four to become five very quickly.
