Big-money contracts are all the rage in the AFL at the moment, and GWS star Finn Callaghan has once again brought up the conversation around who will become the first $2 million-a-season man.

According to 9news Melbourne's Tom Morris, Callaghan rejected a $17m 10-year deal with St Kilda to re-sign with the Giants.

The offer to Callaghan would've made him the highest paid player in the competition. It's believed Richmond's Tom Lynch currently earns about $1.5m a year.

As the salary cap begins to increase and revenue rises in the AFL, there's a rich future ahead for players.

At the AFL captains day on Monday, a number of club skippers revealed to 9news who they believe will become the first ever $2m player.

One young superstar was a popular pick.

Toby Greene (GWS): "I'd give it to Sam Darcy I reckon. He's a bit of a freak in terms of just that height and ability."

Toby Nankervis (Richmond): "Harley Reid, he'd probably be worth every bit of it."

Jack Steele (St Kilda): "I'd say it'd probably be Harley Reid."

Lachie Neale (Brisbane Lions): "I'll go with Harley Reid, because he'll be in demand with Victorian clubs, but I hope he stays at West Coast and becomes a great player at the Eagles."

Reid kicked three goals in the Western Derby.

James Sicily (Hawthorn): "Harley," he said before he was asked if Reid would be at Hawthorn after a photo emerged of Reid and Hawks coach Sam Mitchell sitting together at Tom Barrass' wedding. "I saw that photo, we'll see," he replied.

Zach Merrett (Essendon): "I think Nick Daicos, he's the obvious (pick), he's an amazing player. He'd be very deserving. I think it's a good sign for where the game's going."

According to afl.com.au, 25 players were paid more than $1 million a season in 2024.

Christian Petracca, Dustin Martin and Tom Lynch were the players believed to be topping that list.
