Sweet behind-the-scenes moment we didn't get to see during Queen Mary's historic moment
It has been just over a year since tens of thousands of royal supporters greeted their new king and queen in Denmark.
On January 14, 2024, the newly-proclaimed King Frederik and Queen Mary walked onto the balcony of Christiansborg Palace to cheers and applause.
It was an historic moment; Australian-born Mary Donaldson was now Queen of Denmark.
What most royal followers didn't know was that a very special person had travelled from Australia to support Mary, 52, in that moment – her older sister Jane Stephens.

In a newly-released video shared on the Danish royal family's official social media channels, Mary is seen embracing her sister moments before she stepped onto the balcony.
Watch the video above.
The video has been released for the first anniversary of the coronation.
In it, we see the Danish royal family walk into the room in preparation for their big moment.

King Frederik, 56, is seen hugging his brother Prince Joachim, 55, before his oldest, Crown Prince Christian, 19, is seen placing a supportive arm around his father.
Princess Isabella, 17, then blows kisses towards his father, who then walks out for the proclamation.

King Frederik then takes a deep breath and walks out onto the balcony alone, before he is joined by his wife and children.
Danish media outlets had confirmed Mary's sister would be flying in from Australia for the momentous ceremony.

Mary is the youngest of four children. Jane is the eldest sibling in the family, followed by Patricia and brother John.

Jane was joined by husband Craig Stephens for the special occasion.
Mary's father John lives in Tasmania, with the royal flying back for regular visits with her family.
Her mother Henrietta died in 1997 from complications following heart surgery when Mary was 25, just three years before her daughter met the Danish royal at the Slip Inn in Sydney.
John is now married to crime novelist Susan Horwood.
John walked his daughter down the aisle for her royal wedding which was beamed around the world.

Queen Mary was instantly embraced in Denmark and continues to be beloved.
She and Frederik are parents to four children – Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine who turned 14 on January 8.
