King Frederik reveals detail that made his proclamation particularly 'emotional' as he reflects one year on

King Frederik has marked the first year of his reign by reflecting on the day of his proclamation.

On Tuesday, the monarch shared a range of new behind-the-scenes images taken on January 14 last year, just moments before Crown Prince Frederik became King Frederik.

"Seriousness. Concentration. A smile on my face," His Majesty said in the caption.

"It was all at stake when this time a year ago I was getting ready for the proclamation.

"Taking over my mother without having to say goodbye at the same time was and is a privilege of the greats."

Queen Margrethe surprised the world by announcing her abdication in her New Year's Eve address, the first time in 900 years a Danish monarch had stepped down.

The then-83-year-old said she needed to focus on her health following back surgery and stepped aside on the 52nd anniversary of her own accession to the throne following her father's death.

The crown prince's transition to king also gave the world it's first Australian-born royal when Tasmanian beauty Mary Donaldson became Queen Mary.

King Frederik, who shed tears on the balcony while holding his wife's hand and waving at the roaring crowds following the very informal changeover, described it as "an emotional and unforgettable day from start to finish".

The carousel of images were taken by photographer Dennis Stenild at royal residence Amalienborg just before Frederik departed for Christiansborg Castle.

It showed the royal getting dressed into his ceremonial uniform, giving a rare insight into what's worn underneath the military coat - a white shirt and black suspenders.

The coat doesn't wait for the royal on a hanger like it might do for us normal folk, instead, we see the ceremonial garb waiting on a mannequin in a stunning black and white shot.

The Danish Royal Household also shared a video montage in a separate post to mark the first anniversary of the succession to the throne.

It's understood King Frederik and Queen Mary are marking the anniversary of their new roles as monarchs in private with the family, having just returned from a short getaway last week.
