King Frederik X and Queen Mary appeared on the balcony of Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg to celebrate the monarch's 57th birthday on Monday May 26.
This photo was taken by a photographer from the Danish Royal Household, capturing a rarely-seen perspective of the royal couple from just inside the doors of their home.
Thousands crowded into the palace square to see the King and royal family appear on the balcony at noon.
Frederik VIII's Palace is the main residence of the Danish royals in the winter.
It is one of the four palaces that make up Amalienborg, a grand complex in the heart of Copenhagen.
The then-Crown Prince family moved into the mansion after an extensive renovation and modernisation in 2010, which had begun in 2004 around the time of the royal wedding.
Three of their four children joined King Frederik and Queen Mary on the balcony: Princess Isabella, 18, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 14.
Crown Prince Christian was absent for the celebrations due to commitments relating to his military service, which saw him recently qualify as a Guards Hussar.
Frederik's mother, Queen Margrethe II, was also included in the event.
Much to the surprise of the royals, one of their two pet dogs ran out onto the balcony, causing them to laugh.
The family has two Australian border collies, Grace and Coco, and it's not clear which of the two dogs wanted to get into the celebrations on Monday.
It's believed to be the first time the royal dogs have appeared on the palace balcony.
Photos from the afternoon shared by the royal household included a few behind-the-scenes images from inside their family home, with one showing the King with one of his opened presents.
This one shows Princess Josephine with the star of the show.
King Frederik turned 57 on May 26. It is his second birthday as monarch.
Princess Isabella's 18th birthday portrait
A new portrait has been released to mark Princess Isabella's 18th birthday.
The Danish royal family shared the regal snap to their official social media pages, noting that the images were taken in the Knight's Hall of Frederick VIII's Palace in Amalienborg.
In the images, Princess Isabella wears "the Order of the Elephant with a star chest, a turquoise and diamonds turquoise and a miniature Order portrait of her father, His Majesty the King."
The princess has only been able to wear the Order of the Elephant since she turned 18, marking a huge milestone as her first portrait wearing the royal insignia.
Queen Mary's 53rd birthday portrait
Queen Mary celebrated her 53rd birthday on February 5 with a new portrait released by the Danish royal household.
The Australian-born Queen looked elegant in a high neck white silk blouse tucked into a powder pink lace skirt as she perched on the edge of a sofa in their home, Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg.
The royal is also seen wearing her two bangles, believed to be Cartier, thought to be gifts from King Frederik in previous years. One features the initial 'M' in diamonds.
Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent turn 14, January
The Danish royal twins are growing up fast!
January 8 marked Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent's 14th birthday, an occasion King Frederik and Queen Mary marked with the release of new portraits.
"The birthday pictures were taken on New Year's Eve - shortly after the father of the birthday boy had given his first New Year's speech," the translated caption on Instagram reads.
