King Charles announces visit to Poland for solemn occasion

King Charles will travel to Poland at the end of the month, joining royals from around the world for what will be a solemn occasion.

Charles, 76, will head to Poland to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed the monarch will attend the commemoration service at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and Memorial on January 27.

Holocaust Memorial Day marks the day in 1945 when soldiers of the Soviet Union liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II.

Hannah Furness, Royal Editor at Telegraph UK, explained this is an "important event".

"The King has been really personally involved - he had those portraits done for the Royal Collection," she told HELLO!'s A Right Royal Podcast

"And the Prince and Princess of Wales have done a lot of engagements with Holocaust survivors."

Also expected to attend, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg and King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain.

Charles will also meet the President of the Republic of Poland, Mr Andrzej Duda.

Charles and Camilla were most recently in Poland in 2008 and again in 2010 as part of a wider European tour which included Hungary and the Czech Republic.

It is understood Queen Camilla will not join Charles for this next trip to Poland.

The pair will travel to Italy for their first major royal tour of 2025 in the first half of the year where he will meet with Pope Francis for the first time as monarch.

King Charles is continuing his cancer treatment following his diagnosis for an undisclosed form of the disease in 2024.

It has been reported Charles is planning to return to a full program of public duties this year.

The King and Camilla recently visited Australia in October, the cost of which has since been reported to be £297,000 (approx. $601,000).

The King's tour – adjusted to include a rest day as he continued his cancer treatment – was his first to Australia as sovereign.
