Queen Margrethe shares message of thanks one month on from abdication: 'I have been pleased'

Queen Margrethe of Denmark has shared a heart-felt message one month on from her abdication on January 14.

Margrethe, 83, shared on the Danish Royal Family's official social media channels the following message that has been translated from Danish to English.

It reads: "Since the turn of the year, I have been pleased to experience the great and warm attention from all parts of the Commonwealth in connection with my abdication exactly one month ago.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the gifts I have received, and to everyone who has either written, drawn, baked, knitted, flagged, sung or otherwise sent a greeting on the occasion of the change of throne," she continues.

The royal ended her message by saying: "The many greetings have gone to my heart and I have appreciated each one."

She signed off with a pen emoji next to her name "Queen Margrethe."

Along with the message she shared a selection of children's drawings and letters since she handed rule of Denmark over to her son King Frederik, 55, and his wife, Australia's Queen Mary, 52.

Queen Margrethe announced her plan to abdicate following 52 years of rule during her New Year's Even address in December 2023.

"I have decided that now is the right time. On 14th January, 2024, 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark," she said.

King Frederik X was proclaimed the new monarch from the balcony of Christiansburg Palace.

He spoke of his hope to become "a unifying king of tomorrow."

"It's a task I've approached all my life. It's a task I've taken on with pride, respect and joy," he said.

"I need all the support I can get. From my beloved wife, from my family, from you and from that which is greater than us. I face the future knowing that I am not alone.

"Bound, committed, for the Kingdom of Denmark."
