Princess Eugenie gives birth to baby girl, Buckingham Palace confirms

Princess Eugenie has given birth to a baby girl, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The baby is the third child for the princess and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, and arrived on Monday (early Tuesday AEST).

King Charles and Queen Camilla said they were “delighted” at the news, according to a post from the palace on social media.

The new baby is a younger sibling to August, five, and Ernest, three. 

The baby girl, whose name is yet to be revealed, was born in Portugal, a bit of a change from Portland Hospital in London, where the princess delivered her first two children.

“Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, born on Monday, 3rd August 2026, at 6.20pm, at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal,” the statement from Buckingham Palace said.

“The baby was born weighing 6 pounds 9 ounces [3 kilograms]. 

“Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of The Royal Family were delighted to be informed of the news.”

The Instagram post noted Brooksbank took the photo.

He and Eugenie are known to spend a lot of time at their home in the luxurious CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club on the Portuguese coast, an hour south of Lisbon.

The baby is 15th in line to the throne and is not expected to receive a royal title. 

When her pregnancy was announced earlier this year Princess Eugenie said on Instagram: “Baby Brooksbank due 2026!” 

The post was accompanied by a photograph of Ernest and August looking at a photo of the baby’s scan. 

The new baby is the fifth grandchild for the former Duke and Duchess of York, who were stripped of their royal titles by King Charles in October last year because of their links to the late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein. 

Eugenie and Brooksbank married in 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, after meeting eight years earlier in Verbier in the Swiss Alps.

Another royal baby born outside of the UK

Princess Eugenie’s daughter was born in Portugal, where the family live when not in London. They also spent time at Ivy Cottage, on the grounds of Kensington Palace, where they moved to in 2018.

Earlier this year it was revealed the rents of Princess Eugenie, and that of her sister Princess Beatrice at St James’ Palace, are covered by King Charles in an arrangement put in place under the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Even though the new royal baby was born in Portugal, a European Union country, she is not automatically entitled to Portuguese citizenship. To be eligible, babies born there must be registered and have at least one parent who has lived in Portugal for three consecutive years at the time of birth.

The baby is not the first modern British royal to be born outside the UK. In 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan’s daughter Princess Lilibet was born at a hospital in Santa Barbara in the US.

Lilibet made history by becoming the most senior royal in the current line of succession to be born overseas, sitting in seventh place. She was also the first of Queen Elizabeth II’s great-grandchildren to be born outside the UK.

And in 2013 Maud Windsor − the first grandchild of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent − was born at a hospital in Los Angeles, where her parents, actress Sophie Winkleman and Lord Frederick Windsor, were living at the time.

Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth II, was famously born in Greece on the island of Corfu.

Happy news after a difficult year

The news follows a difficult few months for the York family, which has found itself at the centre of headlines linked to Epstein.

In February, Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office following allegations he shared sensitive information with Epstein during his time as the UK’s trade envoy. He was taken into custody on February 19, his 66th birthday, but later released. No charges have been laid.

Andrew has always denied any wrongdoing.

He is now living at Marsh Farm on the king’s private Sandringham Estate in Norfolk after being evicted, along with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, from Royal Lodge in Windsor.

Both Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie have remained largely out of the spotlight since the Epstein scandal engulfed their parents.

The sisters were each mentioned hundreds of times in the cache of Epstein emails released by the US Department of Justice late last year.

Beatrice and Eugenie were absent from several major royal-related events this year including Easter at Windsor Castle, Royal Ascot and Wimbledon, which were attended by senior members of the family.

However, they returned to the royal fold for the wedding of their cousin, Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling on June 6.

Although their parents were stripped of their royal titles, Beatrice and Eugenie were able to keep theirs. Both are not working royals.

Apart from sharing her pregnancy announcement and posts to mark the birthdays of Ernst and Jack earlier in the year, Princess Eugenie has kept off Instagram.

Her new baby would have been the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the third to be born since her death in 2022.
