Phoebe Burgess hits back at online trolls who label her a 'gold digger'

Phoebe Burgess has a message for anyone who wants to label her a "gold digger" or even just a "WAG".

The journalist and single mum, who was married to NRL star Sam Burgess for four years, hit back at online trolls who stereotyped her after her high-profile split.

If she truly was a gold digger, Burgess explains in new podcast Under The Gloss, she wouldn't need to be working hard on her career to build a good life for her children.

"I wish [I was a gold digger]. Do you know why I wish? I would not have to be in here talking to you lot because I would be so f---ing rich I would never have to work a day in my life," Burgess, 33, told journalist Claire Harvey.

"I would have a yacht, I'd be living there with my toy boy who was 20 years younger than me or whatever, and I'd be having a really comfortable life."

Burgess went on to slam media reports that claimed she was earning money and "gold digging" in the wake of her split from the former Rabbitohs player.

"I think the media really enjoys putting stereotypes on women who've been through things and I think a 'gold digger' is a really easy one to place on a woman who was married to someone who had a very successful career but it's never been in my personality to take and run," she continued.

Elsewhere in the podcast interview, Burgess also said she was single but was open to dating again.

"Yes, I am single and I am looking. Must like children. There we go!" she laughed.

Burgess has been candid about the toll online bullying takes on her in the past.

In 2020, the former magazine journalist told 9Honey she found the worst trolling came from other mums.

"I have been attacked for the way I feed, the way my kids sleep, the way I dress, the car seat positioning and the list goes on," she revealed in 2020.

"Raising your children is the most personal experience you can share with others, and the most heartbreaking trolling I have ever experienced is from other mothers. This trend is the most worrying to me.

"It is my firm belief that mothers should learn from and support each other. Period."

Burgess split from her NRL ex-husband in 2019 after he was involved in an alleged sexting scandal with another woman.

The couple share two children, Poppy, five, and Billy, three.
