Sydney teen Kmart worker claims to have been reprimanded over 'creative' customer service announcement

A Sydney teenager who attempted to brighten the days of Kmart customers during a recent shift says he was given a warning over the incident.

Liam Gildea, decided to spice up a customer service announcement, adding a British flair via music and a donned accent.

The teen, who is currently studying in Year 12, shared a video of his announcement on TikTok @liamgildea.

In the video we see him holding the store microphone up to his phone which plays 'Spring' by Vivaldi before he dramatically said: "Good evening customers. The time is now 8.50pm. This store will close in 10 minutes time.

"And as the sun must set on a beautiful horizon, so must you make your way to the front of the store to finalise your purchase," he continued. "Do note tomorrow morning we reopen at 8am for your shopping convenience.

He ends the announcement by saying: "Good morrow customers. Good morrow."

The video was viewed 11 million times, with TikTokers delighted by his performance.

"This is the correct way to do these announcements," one TikToker commented.

"Bro deserves a raise," another said.

"I would love to hear this in the shops," added another.

Instead of being praised for his creativity, Gildea claims that he received an official warning for breaching the company's standard operating procedures (SOPs) and for breaching their social media policy for sharing the video on TikTok.

"I got pulled into the office about a week later and had a chat with my managers and I was told I was in breach of the social media policy and I was in breach of the SOPs for how we close the store," he told 2GB's Chris O'Keefe.

He was also banned from delivering the closing announcement at the store.

Gildea has since resigned from Kmart, saying he thought the situation was "poorly handled".

He detailed his feelings in a resignation letter.

"They said they were upset to see me go, but I told them all good things must come to an end," he told O'Keefe.
