How often pyjamas need washing to be free of germs and odours

The sniff test probably won't cut it when it comes to washing your pyjamas, according to a laundry expert.

Whether you do it every week or every few days, washing pyjamas is dependent on individual routines rather than a hard and fast rule.

Carolyn Forté, Executive Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute's Home Care & Cleaning Lab, said there are factors that influence how often you wash them.

"It's a personal preference, but usually three to four wears is fine," she told Good Housekeeping.

"If you shower before bed, you can likely wear them longer, but if you sweat at night or they get stained, they'll need more frequent washing."

There are other factors to consider, fabric care scientist Kimberly Romine told the outlet, agreeing that someone's shower schedule can make a big difference.

"This can influence how often you need to wash them."

She also said that if you're going to the gym or eating before bed – without showering – you'll need to wash your pyjamas more often.

"This can lead to increased soil and odour, necessitating more frequent washing," Romine said.

"If you tend to sleep hot, you might need to wash your pyjamas more frequently. Conversely, if you sleep cool and stay relatively dry, you may be able to extend the time between washes," Romine said

If it's been a hot, humid night, Romine says to wash your PJs before your next wear.

Experts say if you're not sure how often to wash them, there's no harm in washing them after every wear.

"Not washing your pyjamas regularly can lead to a buildup of body oils, sweat, and skin cells, which can cause unpleasant odours," Romine
