Red Rock Deli has announced a major change in the ingredients used to make their popular snack, and this change has already happened.

The good news is that many fans of the popular snack haven't even noticed a difference.

The change has impacted not only Red Rock Deli, but other Aussie favourites including Smith's Double Crunch potato chips, Sunbites Grain Waves and Crackers and Australian made Toobs.

The company explained on its website: "Due to widespread disruption to the supply of sunflower oil, we will be adjusting the oil we use to cook some of our snacks.

"We will be moving to Australian-grown canola oil with antioxidants for our Red Rock Deli potato chips, Smith's Double Crunch potato chips, Sunbites Grain Waves and Crackers, and Australian made Toobs.

"This will not impact the high quality or great taste our consumers love. For a limited time, some of our snack's packaging may list sunflower oil on the label when canola oil with antioxidants has been used."

The transition from sunflower oil to Australian-grown canola oil reportedly began in 2024.

While majority of chip lovers didn't clock the switch, others did take to Reddit to report a noticeable difference but their issues weren't just with a flavour change.

One Red Rock Deli fan said they noticed the chips were "so thin/airy now" while another gave the opposing view that the chips are "too thick".

"The flavouring has obviously been cut back by about 50 per cent too with most chips tasting like a memory of what they used to taste like," they added.

"I thought I was going insane last year after getting bag after bag that both tasted bad and had an awful texture," said another.

"Yes the oil tastes different," one said. "I stopped buying last year when I had the same experience.

"I have moved on to Harvest Snaps Pea Chips because I love the crunchy texture of them and no bad oil aftertaste."

Still, there are plenty of Red Rock Deli fans, with some taking to Reddit this month panicked at not being able to find the Thai Chill & Lime flavour, which has been discontinued at Woolworths.

Thankfully, this flavour is still being sold at Coles and other retailers.

Other Redditors used the opportunity to give Aldi chips a shout out, which are similar but are available at a lower price.

"Switched to Aldi recently and honestly think Blackstone are better than any other chips generally available at supermarkets," one said.

"Eating Honey Soy Chicken bag right now. Really good."

Some chip lovers lamented the demise of Tyrrell's chips, which were discontinued in Australia in 2025.

"Don't get me started about Tyrrell's," one said.

While potato chips are still considered to be an affordable snack, they have increased in price due to an ongoing potato shortage, and associated issues such as the sunflower oil shortage which has now been resolved.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has reported an eight to ten percent increase in the price of Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages over the past year, although some claim the price of snack foods including potato chips has increased by closer to 15 to 25 per cent over the past two years.

This is in line with an overall increase in the cost of groceries, which has left Aussie scrambling to make ends meet in the supermarket.
