Fans of the spicy option have until June 9 to purchase it ahead of a brand new flavour being launched in July.

Coles introduced the Portuguese-inspired Peri-Peri roast chicken in January and it quickly became a fan favourite, thanks to its winning combination of chilli, garlic, sweet paprika, oregano, cumin and lemon.

At the time, Coles General Manager Meat, Deli and Seafood Karen O’Connor said the limited-edition roast chicken had been developed to help customers bring a bold new flavour into their weeknight meal rotation.

“Our RSPCA approved hot roast chicken is an Aussie classic, so we’re always looking for new ways to delight customers with flavours they’ll love,” she said.

“It’s our second highest selling product across the country, and last year we sold more than 20 million of our RSPCA approved hot roast chickens.

“We knew we had to get the flavour profile spot on, with a punchy peri peri hit, a juicy roast finish, and a spiced couscous stuffing that complements all kinds of sides.”

“Our new Peri-Peri chicken is the ultimate grab-and-go dinner, bringing big flavour that rivals takeaway taste without the extra effort, whether you’re feeding a crowd at a barbeque or sorting a quick weeknight meal.”

In its place, Coles is launching a butter chicken-flavoured hot chook from July 8.

The official description of the Coles Special Edition Roast Chicken Butter Chicken says it is “infused with mild fragrant spices” along with the usual “100% Australian, RSPCA Approved Chicken”.

Whiles Coles’ traditional roast chickens cost $13 each, increasing from $12.50 earlier this year, their limited-edition roast chicken flavours are $13.50.

Coles has released several takes on their classic roast chook, including Southern Style in 2023, Vegemite and Honey BBQ in 2022, and Mexican-flavoured spice in 2020.

Coles sells approximately 20 million roast chickens each year. The so-called ‘Bachelor’s Handbag’ is popular with all shoppers.

Woolworths sells a similar amount of roast chooks. It released a Smokey BBQ variety earlier this year, and collaborated with Zeus Greek Street for a Zeus Greek Street-inspired chicken in 2025.
