What is a dot cake? The viral dessert taking the internet by storm
There's a brand new dessert to try this weekend – and its simple, sprinkle-topped goodness is proving wildly popular online.
The latest sweet treat craze sweeping TikTok is the 'dot cake' – a small, spoon-able dessert contained within a cup, and topped with a frosting and sprinkle layer.
Originating from the The Dotcakes bakery in New York, they've been flying off the shelves – and now social media has picked up on the tasty trend.

If you have TikTok, chances are you will have seen creators' either trying the viral treat, or attempting at recreate it at home.
Their viral appeal is largely attributed to their colourful, crunchy top layer, which serves to balance out the soft cake underneath.
Per the Dotcakes website, the 255 gram 'Dotcups' are customisable and start at around $44 for a box of four cakes.
The brand also noted that it's not currently accepting custom orders "due to extremely high demand."

In a statement given to People from a Dotcake Bakery spokesperson, they spoke of their shock and delight over the unexpected boom of their product.
"We thought the cakes were fun, nostalgic, beautiful and genuinely delicious – and our customers immediately connected with them," they said.
"They've always done well for us, but over the past few weeks the demand has exploded."
The trend has also reached Aussie shores, with influencer Riley Hemson managing to get her hands on a chocolate dot cake to taste test – before later recreating it at home.

"It essentially is just like a cupcake at a kid's party," Hemson admitted, with husband Vita Tomoana adding that it reminded him of "the cake version of a hundreds and thousands biscuit."
She then let her followers know how the homemade version stacked up against the original.
"I reckon the New York one would be a 12 out of 10, and this one would be like a nine out of 10," she revealed.
"I think it's a 10," Tomoana claimed.

Creator Lexi Lobb was also a huge fan, posting her own video of her recreating the cake.
But commenters weren't totally on board with the dot cake craze, with many pointing out the hype was ridiculous considering the no-frills nature of the dessert trend.
"Its literally regular cake with sprinkles are we deada--?" one commenter demanded.
"This has been around for years why are we treating it like some brand new food?" Said another.
Another Aussie influencer wasn't quite as taken by the viral dessert, expressing her annoyance at its current popularity.
Influencer Tayla Broad posted her own TikTok response, in which she criticised those going mad for dot cakes online.
"No offence to the people doing it, but dot cakes, guys, it's a f--king cupcake," she said.
"It is literally a cupcake with sprinkles. My daughter gets them once a week at a café."
"Like what are you doing? Why are you falling for this? And you're all racing off to film your little videos! It's a cupcake," the frustrated creator stated.
