Three iconic British Smith’s chip flavours have just landed at Aldi. Are they worth the hype? We have the answer

Aldi has done it again, this time sparking a fierce debate with the return of three legendary British Smith’s chip flavours.

For a limited time only, Aussies can purchase a packet of Smith’s chips (or “crisps”) in the Prawn Cocktail, Cheese & Pickle and Worcestershire Sauce flavours usually found in the UK. It begs the question: should they be a permanent fixture on Australian shelves, too?

Expats are currently weeping tears of nostalgic joy into their shopping trolleys – along with our Lifestyle editor Karina, who declares the Worcestershire Sauce flavour the “best item to ever be stashed in the junk aisle at any supermarket, ever”.

So, is she right? There was only one way to find out. Cue: an office-wide taste test.

The verdict?

We love a good chip flavour in Australia, but these British varieties take us way beyond our comfort zones of Original, Salt & Vinegar and Chicken – or Cheese & Onion for the more adventurous.

The Prawn Cocktail variety got mixed reviews, largely because the prawn flavour was hard to detect. They tasted more like tomato chips, which are fine, but nothing special.

“That’s definitely just tomato. I don’t taste any prawn, just straight tomato,” was Joseph’s verdict.

However, it got a rave review from our resident Brit, Nicole: “It tastes exactly like home. I love it. 10 out of 10.”

There were similarly mixed opinions about the Cheese & Pickle – although even some who stated they loathed pickles became instant fans.

While Joseph felt it was “a lot” of pickle – “I don’t know if I like that” – Patrick found it weak: “It’s not bad, but I was expecting more of a stronger pickle taste.”

“Nice pickle aftertaste, but not very strong,” Polly added. Nick agreed it was “very mild” compared to other pickle-flavoured products.

Lauren said it “hit the spot”, describing the taste as, “Nice and acidic, not too overly cheesy”.

This was a far cry from Nicole’s verdict of “the most rancid thing I’ve ever tasted.”

We had a clear winner in the Worcestershire Sauce chip, with Nicole giving it a “9.8 out of 10” as she “loved every second” of the eating experience.

Damian said it was “certainly” his favourite of the three, a verdict echoed by Patrick.

“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think the Worcestershire Sauce is actually the best.”

“I would go back for more of these. This feels like barbeque chips-plus,” Lauren added.

The British Smith’s chip flavours are in stock for a limited time only and cost just $2.99 for a 150g pack.

They feature alongside other famous UK brands that arrive at Aldi Australia once a year.

New arrivals in the British snack range for 2026 include the Swizzels Sweet Shop Favourites Box, made up of iconic British lollies including Parma Violets, Drumstick lollies, Love Hearts, Refresher bars, Fizzers and Double lollies, for $9.99.

There are also Swizzels Squashies, which are soft, squishy gummies, for $3.79.

Also back by popular demand are British chocolates including Cadbury Pouch Buttons for $5.49, and Galaxy chocolate blocks for $4.99.
