Australia’s best budget supermarket olive oil has been crowned – and it’s only $13.99

Aldi’s The Olive Tree Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been crowned Australia’s best budget brand by Choice, landing at number five on the consumer group’s list of best supermarket extra virgin olive oils.
It costs just $13.99 for a 750ml bottle which works out to be $1.87 per 100ml, and was given a 78 per cent rating by experts.
This isn’t the only affordable brand to score highly in the rating. Woolworths Spanish Extra Virgin Olive Oil made it to eighth place on the list with a 78 per cent overall rating. Another bargain buy, this one costs $9 for a 500ml bottle or $1.80 per 100ml.

The price of olive oil has soared in Australia over the past five years, with the cost of some supermarket brands doubling.
This is due to catastrophic heatwaves and prolonged droughts in major growing regions in the Mediterranean including in Spain where almost half of the world’s olive oil is produced.
Australia produces a limited supply of olive oil, which have been impacted by increasing production costs.
The other extra virgin olive oil brands that made it into the top 10 of the consumer group’s rating are much pricier.

The overall winner is Monini Classico Extra Virgin Olive Oil which is sold at Coles and Woolworths but is much pricier, at $22 for a 750ml bottle or $2.93 cost per 100ml. This scored a rating of 88 per cent.
In second place, Villa Rossi Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which can be found at Harris Farm Market and independent retailers, but is one of the more expensive selections at $35 for a 1L bottle or $3.5 cost per 100ml, and was given an 83 per cent expert rating.
Cobram Extra Virgin Classic landed in third place with a score of 80 per cent. This brand can be found at Coles and Woolworths and costs $25 for a 750ml bottle, or $3.33 per 100ml. Although Woolworths has marked it down by 40 per cent this week so shoppers will pay just $2 per 100ml.
In fourth spot, Mount Zero Arbequina Extra Virgin Olive Oil, with a score of 79 per cent. This one costs $19.50 for a 500ml bottle which works out to be $3.90 cost per 100ml. You’ll find this one at IGA.
Then Aldi’s bargain buy in fifth place, followed by Carbonell Extra Virgin Olive Oil, also at 78 per cent, which is priced at $26 for 1L or $2.60 cost per 100ml. This one is also sold at independent retailers.
In seventh place, a brand most Australian’s have heard of, Moro Primero Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which costs $27 for a 1L bottle or $2.7 cost per 100ml and has been given a score of 78 per cent.

Rounding out the top ten is Woolworths in eight place, then another one from Cobram, this one is Cobram Extra Virgin Rich and Robust which earned a 77 per cent rating and landed in ninth place. It costs $15 for a 750ml bottle or $3.33 per 100ml.
And in tenth place, Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil, with a score of 77 per cent. This one costs $16.99 for a 500ml bottle or $3.40 per 100ml.
The consumer group compared 30 of the most popular supermarket extra virgin olive oil brands, putting them through all sorts of sensory and chemical tests, first to determine if they all meet the criteria for extra virgin olive oil, and then ranking them according to taste.
To ensure you have chosen the best olive oil possible for your family, Choice recommends purchasing it from a store with a “high turnover”.

They also advise shoppers avoid buying it from stores where the olive oil has been placed near a heat source.
Once home, store the olive oil in a cool, dark place, and make sure it is properly sealed between uses.
