A group of AFL players have come under fire for admitting their dirty laundry habits in a viral clip that has since been deleted.

On Tuesday, the AFL shared a clip on Instagram featuring 12 Aussie rules players being grilled on how long they leave it before changing their bedding.

The confessions were eye-opening, with six of the players admitting they don't do it themselves, leaving that job up to their mums or partners.

AFL players talk about how often they wash their sheets

In a now-deleted video AFL players made some gross confessions about how often they wash their sheets.  Instagram/@afl

"My wife changes them every week," said the Crows' Taylor Walker.

"My sheets? My mum does it," Isaac Kako confessed.

"I didn't even really realise it was a thing until I got a girlfriend," admitted Essendon's Nate Caddy.

"I live with my girlfriend now so she does it every couple of weeks," said the Sydney Swan's Chad Warner.

Other comments were shocking for a whole other reason.

"In my first year away from home, I didn't realise you had to change them… so they were probably on for a year," Andrew Brayshaw confessed.

Unsurprisingly, people in the comments were not only horrified by the lack of hygiene, but also for promoting gender stereotypes.

"I know this was meant to be funny, but the fact that so many of these 'grown up' men only change their sheets because their wives or girlfriends do it for them, or still have their mums changing their beds just shows how the mental load for a household is carried by women," read one comment on the since deleted post.

Others vented that this was a "major ick", and plenty were horrified that adult men still left this chore to their mums.

Yeah, leaving your sheets a year between washes? Not cool.  Getty

The video was deleted from the AFL's social media pages on Wednesday afternoon.

Nine.com.au has contacted the AFL for comment.

It truly is baffling that so many adult men seem so clueless about what is essentially such a basic task?

While it would seem like common knowledge that you don't leave your sheets for a year between washes, there are some things to consider about how often you need to do it.

Emma Harding, molecular virology researcher and PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales, told nine.com.au when it comes to washing sheets and clothes, "it depends how dirty they get".

"If you have pets that regularly go outside and jump on your sheets, bringing in dirt and microbes, you should wash them at least once a week, probably twice. Also, if you regularly sweat at night, you should wash your sheets more often," Harding said.

"If you wear pyjamas and rarely contact the sheets, don't get dirt on them from outside, once a fortnight is fine."

While sheets often get a lot of air time when it comes to how often and how best to wash them, it seems we should instead be paying more attention to our pillowcases.

"When cleaning sheets, focus on the pillowcase as that is what contacts your face and can get the dirtiest – change this at least once a week if not more," she said.
