'Wouldn't have been with a man': Natalie Bassingthwaighte on discovering her sexuality and why she is honest with her kids

Natalie Bassingthwaighte has given a candid look at her life during an appearance on the latest episode of Osher Günsberg's podcast Better Than Yesterday.

The Australian performer opened up about everything from rejection in the industry to the breakdown of her marriage, discovering her sexuality and how she navigated co-parenting.

The singer, who was married to her Rogue Traders bandmate Cameron McGlinchey for 12 years, said she believes if it had been societally acceptable to experiment with her sexuality in her 20s, her life might have looked very different.

"When we grew up it was 'you get married and you're with a man and you have children and you have a house and you have a business' and it wasn't like my parents were like that to me but the world was like that," the 50-year-old said.

"I have this feeling - whether it's true or not, I'll never know - is that if I was with a woman in my 20s, I probably wouldn't have been with a man, is what I feel."

Bassingthwaighte has been dating Pip Loth since 2023, after she split from McGlinchey, and the pair got engaged last October.

She said being co-parents and honest with their two kids - daughter Harper, 15, and son Hendrix, 12 - has been a cornerstone for their family.

"You want to protect your children at all costs ... so, there's that, but if you lie to your children, that's forever," the mum-of-two said.

"Don't lie to your children, they're too smart for that shit. I'm a big believer in speaking the truth to them."

The former Neighbours actress added that she is "so obsessed with my kids" that she knows her life worked out the way it was meant to.

"I was supposed to meet Cam," she said of her ex-husband.

"We were supposed to have these kids, so just because I say, 'Oh, if I was with a woman in my 20s', I know that this is how it [life] was supposed to roll out in a way."

The wide-ranging chat between the Australian celebrities came following the release of Bassingthwaighte's memoir, Love Like This.

The singer said writing the eye-opening read made her more open and honest about her life.

She spoke openly about therapy, mental health and even having work done on her face.

"I've had so much shit done to my face, I'll do whatever is available," she said, adding it angers her when people pretend to be perfect and natural when they're not.
