What is the plot of The Substance?

In The Substance, Demi Moore portrays Elisabeth Sparkle, a once-celebrated Hollywood actress now facing the harsh realities of aging in an industry obsessed with youth.

After being unceremoniously dismissed from her long-running aerobics TV show due to her age, she desperately tries to reclaim her former glory and learns of a black-market serum known as "The Substance," which promises to create a "younger, more beautiful, more perfect" version of oneself.

Intrigued, Elisabeth procures and injects the serum into herself, resulting in the emergence of a younger doppelgänger named Sue (Margaret Qualley).

The two share a consciousness but must alternate control of the shared life every seven days, with the inactive body remaining unconscious and requiring intravenous sustenance.

Daily injections of a stabilising fluid, extracted from Elisabeth's body, are necessary to prevent Sue from deteriorating.

Sue rapidly becomes a sensation, auditioning and succeeding as Elisabeth's replacement on the TV show, eventually being offered the opportunity to host a prestigious New Year's Eve special.

As Sue embraces a confident and hedonistic lifestyle, Elisabeth retreats into reclusion, grappling with self-loathing and the physical toll of the serum's side effects.

What happens next... well, that's one of the most shocking plot twists in history.
