Fired, feuding and fatality: Shocking truth behind 11 major TV and movie roles that were recast with new actors
You think you could recast a major movie or TV character and we wouldn't notice?!
Be it contract disputes, creative clashes, or tragic circumstances, saying goodbye to a beloved actor is never easy.
We look back at the most controversial and curious recasts, from the Darrins of Bewitched to the changing faces of Gotham and Hawkins here:
11. Bewitched pulled a magic switch
One of the most famous swaps in TV history has to be case of Darrin Stevens from beloved sitcom, Bewitched.
Dick York played the original role of Darrin, Samantha's husband, for the first five seasons up until 1969. Sadly, due to declining health issues from a severe back injury years earlier, York had to step down. Fans were devastated!
He was replaced by Dick Sargent for the show's remaining three seasons out of the show's eight-year run until 1972.

10. Which Witcher is which?
Cavill passes on the sword. Netflix
More recently was the recasting of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher.
Henry Cavill led the hit series as the heroic monster-hunter for three epic seasons, but was replaced by Australia's own Liam Hemsworth for season four in 2025.

Fans believe it was due to Cavill wanting to honour the source materials. The show's executive producer said Cavill "personally" ended his time due to commitment to other roles.
9. When Johnny was out of his depth

The Wizarding World saw a controversial recast when Johnny Depp was replaced by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen for the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
Depp stepped down amid his ongoing court case relating to ex-wife Amber Heard.
8. The Mummy Returns (with a different actress)
Say hello to Maria Bello! Universal Pictures
Brendan Fraser had a new love interest in the third Mummy film, but if you're a fan of the franchise you had to look past it. Maria Bello replaced Rachel Weisz as his wife Evie O'Connell in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Weisz reportedly passed on the sequel due to problems with the script and personal reasons.
7. Brendan does a backflip
Watch out for that... sequel! Buena Vista Pictures / Disney+
One of the most blatantly obvious and hilarious recasts would have to be when Brendan Fraser was replaced by Christopher Showerman in the direct-to-video sequel George of the Jungle 2.
The studio didn't even try to hide it. Showerman broke fourth wall to telling fans "studio too cheap to pay Brendan Fraser".
6. Gotham's girl rises
Dawes does a disappearing act. Warner Bros.
As a result of a scheduling conflict filming Mad Money, Katie Holmes left the Batman franchise playing Bruce Wayne's childhood friend Rachel Dawes.
The role was recast with Maggie Gyllenhaal for the sequel, The Dark Knight, who reassured fans she had Holmes' "blessing".
"It wouldn't have done anyone any good if I tried to imitate her," Gyllenhaal told Digital Spy. "I decided [it] had to be a whole new woman."
5. Back to the Future (to film it again)

What ever happened to Jennifer in Back to the Future (1985)?
Actress Claudia Wells played Marty McFly's girlfriend, Jennifer Parker, in the original Back to the Future movie. But when the sequels were filmed back-to-back, Wells was replaced by Elisabeth Shue, four years later in 1989.

Sadly, Wells didn't return after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She decided to put her career on hold to spend time with family instead.
But, because they time travel in the movies, some scenes from the first film had to be remade with Shue!
4. Bridgerton finds its new diamond
Ruby Stokes passes the role onto Hannah Dodd. Netflix
OK, we knew there was Francesca in Bridgerton, but her original actress Ruby Stokes had minor screen time in seasons one and two. So, you'd be forgiven if you didn't notice she was replaced by Hannah Dodd in the third season.
Stokes left the period drama to take a lead role in another Netflix series Lockwood & Co. leaving Dodd to take over.
3. Seinfeld's Stiller swap

Co-creators felt Randolph's more gentle interpretation of Frank wasn't quite right for the role, leading them to recast the role with Jerry Stiller.
One of Randolph's scenes were even later re-shot with Stiller, and both versions can be found on the season three DVD boxset.

Aunt Vivian, was famously played by Janet Hubert for the first three seasons of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air before being replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid.
Hubert alleges that conflicts with her co-star, Will Smith, led to her exit the show in season four. Reports says she left on her own terms leaving Reid to play the character from 1993 until the show's end in 1996!
1. Stranger switches have happened
Fans point out a new actress plays the role of Holly. Netflix
What happens when a minor role turns into a larger role and you need a more experienced and older actor to play it? You replace them, of course!
It happens all the time in long-standing franchises and has happened recently in hit Netflix series Stranger Things.

Holly Wheeler, the younger sister of Mike and Nancy, was a role originally shared by twins Anniston and Tinsley Price for the first four seasons.
In Season 5, the role was recast with British-New Zealand actress Nell Fisher after creators the Duffer Brothers reportedly made a strategic decision to give Holly a central storyline.
At age 14, Fisher has already appeared in horror film Evil Dead Rise. Does she have what it takes to take on the Upside Down?
It seems fans are divided.
Fans were won over by Fisher's incredible acting, while others argued she was simply too old to be playing a child.
"She's been a great addition to the show but also her age is completely unbelievable," one fan argued on the public forum Reddit.
"I can't believe they couldn't find a 10-year-old child actor to play a 9-year-old. Holly this season looks WAY older than the entire original kid cast," said a second.

"I'll fully admit; when it started I was real confused and not totally on board," wrote one passionate fan. "But by the end of Vol 1., Fisher had totally won me over."
"I was saddened about the recasting of the Price twins... but my goodness, Nell Fisher's acting in E1 and E2 is chilling," said a fourth.
