Nicolas Cage’s $14.5 million Malibu mansion almost destroyed by massive sinkhole
Nicolas Cage has narrowly avoided an insurance nightmare after a massive sinkhole opened up mere millimetres from his $14.5 million US home.
The National Treasure star’s Malibu mansion now teeters on the edge of an almost 10-metre deep hole, which swallowed up the driveway on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST).

Fortunately, Cage wasn’t home when the destruction started according to local news outlet KTLA.
“As a matter of fact, the house looks like it is under some sort of renovation,” reporter Rich Prickett said from the scene.
Local firefighters reportedly discovered the sinkhole while responding to a broken gas main in the area.
Photos of the damage show broken pipes and smashed tiles littering the sides of the nine-metre wide dirt hole.
Rubbish bins and a portaloo also seem to have tumbled into the pit, which appears to open all the way through to the other side of the house in some spots.
Orange hazard cones have been lined up around the edge of the sinkhole and workers have been spotted outside Cage’s mansion assessing the damage.
The Ghost Rider actor forked out for the 370 square metre Malibu pad with ocean views back in 2024, but it seems the prime location could be to blame for Cage’s sudden misfortune.
KTLA reported the sinkhole is believed to have been caused by coastal erosion, which may have been worsened by recent heavy rain and high surf.
No injuries were reported, and no evacuations have been ordered, despite the scale of the damage.
It’s unlikely we’ll receive many updates from Cage himself about the sinkhole that almost destroyed his home.
Despite having spent the better part of his life in Hollywood, Cage tends to keep his personal life rather private.
He even changed his name – professionally first, then legally – to distance himself from his family’s fame in the entertainment industry.

Born Nicolas Kim Coppola, he was born into Hollywood’s famous Coppola family but chose to go by Cage instead to forge his own path.
"I'm Nic Cage in life, and I'm Nic Cage on camera," he told Variety.
“’Tis better to be the patriarch of my own little family than the clown cousin on the margins of someone else’s, so I decided I’m going to bring it on and be ‘Cage’.”
