11 famous movie quotes you didn't realise you've been saying wrong: In pictures
Many iconic movie lines have embedded themselves in our daily lives.
From Jerry Maguire's "Show me the money" to Taken's "What I do have are a very particular set of skills", from Toy Story's "To infinity and beyond", to practically the entire Mean Girls movie, these quotes can evolve into shorthand for everyday moments and situations.
But occasionally, these quotes also morph into something else entirely.
Whether it's a shortening of a longer line, a change in tense or a merging of multiple other quotes, the resulting misquotes can have us all spouting words that never actually happened on screen.
Here are some of those most common slip-ups.
Crocodile Dundee
This week, 39 years ago, the world was introduced to the legendary Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee.
The role was famously played by Aussie actor Paul Hogan. Equally iconic are seven words from Crocodile Dundee's most-quoted scene.
Nearly 40 years on however, it's a line that moviegoers (and many pop culture references) still get wrong.
Misquote: "That's not a knife. This a knife."
Real quote: "That's not a knife. That's a knife."
Forrest Gump
It's one of the most quoted movies in history, but we've all been saying this iconic Forrest Gump quote just ever so slightly wrong.
Misquote: "Mama always said, 'Life is like a box of chocolates.'"
Real quote: "My mama always said life was like a box of chocolates."
...You never know what you're gonna get!
Jaws
Jaws left us with more than just nightmares – it's given us a very common misquote as well!
Misquote: "We're gonna need a bigger boat."
Real quote: "You're gonna need a bigger boat."
The Silence of the Lambs
Speaking of nightmares!
In The Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter never actually says this famous line when meeting Special Agent Clarice Sterling.
Misquote: "Hello, Clarice."
Real quote: "Good evening, Clarice."
The misquote was actually said by Jim Carrey in the Cable Guy though, and Hopkins finally said it in sequel Hannibal.
The Wizard of Oz
Dorothy and Toto certainly have a shock when they find themselves in Oz – which of course, leads to a very famous movie line. But, you guessed it, we've been saying it wrong all along!
Misquote: "Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore."
Real quote: "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."
Dirty Harry
Clint Eastwood has uttered many iconic lines across his career, but this one from Dirty Harry is technically not one of them!
Misquote: "Do ya feel lucky, punk?"
Real quote: "You've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?"
The Empire Strikes Back
It's one of the biggest plot twists in cinematic history, so it seems fitting that Darth Vader's most famous Star Wars line also has a legacy as one of the most misquoted as well.
Misquote: "Luke, I am your father."
Real quote: "No, I am your father."
Casablanca
Casablanca is one of the most influential films of all time, with one of the most misquoted lines as well!
Both Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart's characters ask Dooley Wilson's Sam to play 'As Time Goes By', but not in the way it's regularly quoted.
Misquote: "Play it again, Sam."
Real quote: "Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By.'"
