Robert De Niro says new baby was not a 'surprise' and admits it 'never gets easier'

Robert De Niro has given more details about the arrival of his seventh child.

Hours after news first broke that the 79-year-old actor had "just had a baby", he said he wasn't "surprised" about being a dad again.

The Oscar winner revealed at the New York premiere of his new movie About My Father on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST) that the new bub was planned.

"How you could not plan that kind of thing?" De Niro told Page Six.

The Meet the Parents star then told Extra TV he was happy about the news.

"I'm ok with it," he said when asked about becoming a dad of seven.

"I'm good with it," he added with a smile, quipping that it "never gets easier".

The Emmy Award winner then told Associated Press about the joys of being a father.

"It's always good and mysterious and you don't know what the hell is going to happen."

While the mother of the child hasn't been confirmed, De Niro's co-star Kim Cattrall appeared to confirm speculation it's the actor's rumoured girlfriend Tiffany Chen.

"God bless him, his significant other," Cattrall began telling Extra TV on the red carpet .

"Tiffany is such a beautiful woman. She came to the set once with her family and watched filming, and she was gorgeous and sweet.

"I'm happy for both of them."

De Niro announced the new arrival during an interview with ET Canada while promoting his new movie, when correcting a journalist who asked about what he's like as a father to six kids.

"Seven, actually. I just had a baby," he said.

The Hollywood A-lister, who is now a grandfather, had daughter Drena, 51, and son Raphael, 46, with his first wife, Diahnne Abbott.

Then, in 1995 De Niro and his former girlfriend, model and actress Toukie Smith, welcomed twin sons Julian and Aaron, who are now 27.

The actor also shares son Elliot, 24, and daughter Helen Grace, 11, with ex-wife Grace Hightower, who he split from in 2018 after more than 20 years of marriage.

De Niro has reportedly been dating Chen since 2021, with the pair last photographed together in March.

They met on the set of the 2015 rom-com The Intern, where martial arts instructor Chen made an appearance as a Tai Chi instructor.
