Deadliest Catch star Nick Mavar dies aged 59

Nick Mavar, a former longtime star of the reality show Deadliest Catch, has died aged 59.

Police told Deadline Mavar died of natural causes on Thursday after suffering a medical emergency at a boatyard in Naknek, Alaska.

After paramedics were called, the fisherman was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Mavar was a deckhand on Deadliest Catch for 16 years from 2005 to 2021.

He appeared in 98 episodes of the extreme fishing show, which is broadcast by the Discovery Channel, and in numerous spinoffs.

He left the series abruptly after his appendix ruptured on board the F/V Northwestern, the boat captained by Sig Hansen, in December 2020.

It was later discovered he had a cancerous tumour in his appendix, People reports.

Following the incident, which was documented in the show, Mavar sued Hansen and his wife.

The news of Mavar's death comes four years after two fellow Deadliest Catch cast members died.

Fellow deckhand Mahlon Reyes died in 2020 aged 34 following a heart attack.

He was rushed to the hospital but did not regain consciousness, with his family ultimately deciding to take him off life support.

That same year, fisherman Nick McGlashan died aged 33.
