Laura Byrne has revealed she was totally blindsided after husband Matthew Johnson confessed on a public podcast that they were in “mountains of debt”.
Johnson, 39, appeared as a guest host on Byrne’s Life Uncut podcast to clarify reports about their financial situation, after he had opened up about their hefty mortgage and expensive home renovations on the Home Beautiful podcast.

During the June interview, Johnson said The Bachelor alum couple were renting out their Ulladulla holiday home, which they purchased in 2024 for $2.19 million to help pay the bills.
“We are in a mountain of debt. We’ll be paying off this house for a very, very, very long time,” he said at the time.
After Johnson’s comments made headlines around the country, Byrne told her husband he needed to be more intentional about how he worded things.
“Sometimes you prefer to go for the joke and you don’t care about the consequences,” Byrne said to Johnson on Life Uncut.

Johnson defended himself saying the couple really were in a “mountain of debt”.
“I’m not joking though! That is the truth!” he said. “We’re not drowning but we could do with a life raft though.”
Byrne insisted that wasn’t the case, and they didn’t need to rent out the home to pay off the mortgage like Johnson had first explained.

“It [the mortgage] is very high, but it’s debt that we can handle. It’s fine, we’re not drowning in debt, everyone,” she clarified.
Byrne laughed that Johnson’s initial comments “makes it sound like we’re going bankrupt”.
“We’re fine, we are so fine everyone. No one’s worried about us, I know, but I just wanted to put it out there!” she said.
The pair became household names when they found their happily ever after on The Bachelor Australia in 2017.
They officially tied the knot in 2022 and live in North Bondi with their three daughters, Marlie-Mae, 6, Lola, 5, and Poppy, nine months.
