The songwriter and actor was forced to confront the issue in 2022 after a "devastating conversation" with his wife, Dorothea, following a show on a Bon Jovi tour.
"It wasn't great, and I've seen you be great," he recalled her telling him.
The rocker and Dorothea have been married for more than 30 years. He said there was "no one better" to tell him the truth.
Before the conversation, he had struggled with vocal issues for many years.

As he was considering his options, Bon Jovi read in the media that Twain had undergone the same operation with the same doctor. He reached out to her.
"Not only did she reassure me that it would be OK, but I think she also pulled my leg a little bit because she told me I'd be out there a lot sooner than I have been," he said of the Canadian singer's support.
"She says, 'Well, I told you that because I knew that you might back out otherwise.' And so, I couldn't wait to get the operation."
In June 2022, Bon Jovi had the procedure.
Two years down the track, the Bed of Roses singer says the recovery process continues.
