Why Halle Berry was warned against discussing menopause: 'There's nothing wrong with me'

Halle Berry says she was warned against discussing menopause due to the potential impact it could have on her career.

Berry, 58, spoke about the exchange during an interview with NBC Today for the launched of her business venture Respin Health which describes itself as "an empowering community redefining menopause and female longevity".

Host Laura Jarrett asked Berry about the comment made to her when she decided to launch the business.

"Sadly, people said to me, 'Are you sure you want to talk about that? Do you want to align yourself with menopause? Do you worry how that will affect your career?' And I said, 'No'," Berry responded.

"And that's exactly why I should be talking about it because there's nothing wrong with me being in my mid-life."

"There's nothing wrong with being 58, and you have to stop telling me there's something wrong with me.

"I'm going to prove to you that it's not. And so women, we have to work together to destigmatize this time of life and change culture."

Berry spoke about the importance of women "educating themselves" so they can "make decisions from a place of power, and then they feel empowered and they don't feel so hopeless during this half."

"It's not time to sit down. It's time to reinvent. It's time to have a beautiful, glorious second act," Berry added.

"We can still be our fabulous selves, but we have to learn how."

The Catwoman star opened up about her own journey on the company's website, explaining she found she was in perimenopause at 54 "abruptly, with no warning from my doctors".

"I was not prepared and did not know where to turn for support," she wrote.

"I was one of the millions of women who spent 4-5 years of their lives being misdiagnosed, or not diagnosed at all.

"As a result, I've been driven towards what I now believe is the biggest respin of all — to break the stigma around menopause, sharing my journey and a newfound sense of empowerment."

She explained her new goal to "inspire women like you to embrace this natural transition with the support they deserve – years before your first hot flash".

"We're now building what I wish I'd had access to: a resource for women in the midst of menopause, on the cusp of it in perimenopause, or preparing for it," she continued

"We are focused on making this experience better for all women, and that starts with being rooted in community, backed by science, and leveraging technology to scale. We're redefining what it means to live a healthy life during your second act."

In May 2024, Berry advocated for more research and education on menopause by supporting a bill introduced by Senators Patty Murray and Lisa Murkowski.

At the time she attended a hearing in Washington and spoke about her experience.

"I'm in menopause, OK?... The shame has to be taken out of menopause," she said.

"We have to talk about this very normal part of our life that happens. Our doctors can't even say the word to us, let alone walk us through the journey."
