Nicole Kidman has recalled feeling upset the night she won her 2003 Oscar because she had no partner to celebrate with.

“I was beyond lonely. I had the pinnacle of my success, and I went home and was so lonely,” the Practical Magic 2 star, 59, said during an appearance on the Therapuss podcast.

Kidman won the Academy Award for best actress for portraying Virginia Woolf in The Hours.

At the time, she was single after a high-profile split from her first husband, Tom Cruise, in 2001.

“Crazy, though, that sort of the confluence of events where you go, ‘I wish …’ I had my mom with me and my dad, but I was like, ‘Where’s my partner, someone that I can share this with?’” she said.

“It was one of the most profound moments where I went, ‘I’ve got to get a life,’ and at the same time, I’m holding this gold statue where you go, ‘This is, this is it. This is the highest prize you can get in our industry.’ And so grateful and yet so lonely.”

Kidman said she remembered thinking she’d love to be “wrapped up in somebody’s arms right now”.

“I’d love to be around now, something that feels really, ‘Oh, OK, this is my real life,’” she explained.

Kidman shared similar thoughts while reflecting on her award in author Dave Karger’s 2024 book, 50 Oscar Nights.

“I was struggling with things in my personal life, yet my professional life was going so well,” she said. “That’s what happens, right?”

Kidman had been married to Cruise from 1990 to 2001.

That relationship lasted about a year, but it wasn’t until more than a decade later that Kidman revealed they were actually engaged before their break-up.

She later met Keith Urban, whom she married in 2006 until their split in September 2025.
