Sydney actress Sophie Wilde joins rare club of Aussie stars, alongside Cate Blanchett and Naomi Watts

Exclusive: Sydney’s Sophie Wilde has joined an elite club of Australian stars after landing a role opposite Tom Cruise in the new movie Digger.
By working with Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu, the Sydney actress enters rare territory alongside Aussie royalty Cate Blanchett (Babel) and Naomi Watts (21 Grams).

While Wilde has “never met either of them” she hopes to cross paths with Blanchett and Watts “maybe someday soon”, joking that in the meantime they can start a WhatsApp group chat named The Alejandro Aussies.
It is the latest major milestone for the actress, who already has a Logie Award, AACTA Award, and BAFTA nomination under her belt – all before turning 30 next year.
Speaking to nine.com.au, Wilde says it’s “surreal” to believe she’s achieved so many dreams she had as a five-year-old watching Audrey Hepburn movies and practicing Oscar speeches in the shower.
“I think she’d just be like, ‘Wow!’,” Wilde says of what her younger self would think.

“It is surreal when you kind of take a step back and you’re like, ‘Oh, I’ve achieved the thing I’ve always wanted to do my whole life!’. So it’s very special and surreal and wonderful.”
The former scream queen, who made a name for herself in the 2023 horror flick Talk to Me by Aussie twins Michael and Danny Philippou, has since graced several covers of high-profile fashion magazines around the world.

Her breakthrough role earned her a Best Lead Actress in Film AACTA Award – among the film’s sweep of eight trophies at the 2024 ceremony – and caught the eye of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), who nominated her for a Rising Star Award that same year.
The accolades continued through a career-defining 2024, where she picked up a Silver Logie for Best Supporting Actress in Boy Swallows Universe and starred alongside Nicole Kidman in Babygirl.

Now, Wilde is holding her own opposite Kidman’s ex-husband, Tom Cruise, in a role tipped to earn the Top Gun star an Oscar nomination.
So, what’s still left to achieve?
“I think just to continue working with incredible directors on projects that I’m really passionate about, and working with people like this cast and Alejandro,” Wilde tells nine.com.au.
And starting that WhatsApp group chat, of course.
