Christina Applegate has made a surprise – and emotional – appearance at the postponed 2023 Emmy Awards.

It comes almost one year after confirming her public appearances will become more limited as her multiple sclerosis worsens.

"I'm gonna cry more than I've been crying," Applegate, 52, said through tears while presenting outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series to The Bear's Ayo Edebiri.

During her speech, Applegate reflected on what that particular Emmy category has meant to her over the years, as, of course, she rose to fame with roles in Married... with Children, Samantha Who? and Friends.

True to her comedic nature, she also made a joke at her own expense, wryly declaring: "Body not by Ozempic".

Ozempic is a diabetes medication, which has controversially been used by certain high-profilers for weight loss.

Applegate has been open about the changes her body has undergone since being diagnosed with MS in 2021.

In January 2023, she hit back at trolls who criticised her appearance following a rare outing to the 28th Critics Choice Awards, which hit back at trolls who criticised her appearance.

"Sooooo I made the unfortunate decision to look at some comments on an article from [People] about me and my kids at the CCA," Applegate wrote on Twitter alongside a screenshot of some private messages a troll had sent to her.

"Of course I told her that it wasn't nice. This was her reply. What is wrong with people. By the way, I laughed," she continued.

In the screenshot, the unnamed woman had told Applegate that "MS didn't make you look that way" and accused the actress of getting "bad" plastic surgery.

"A plastic surgeon [made you look that way]," the troll's message said. "And you are a scammer and not [Christina] Applegate."

"And a bad plastic surgeon at that," they added.

The following month, she attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards, though she posited at the time it would be her final awards show appearance.

Applegate proved herself wrong, attending the 2023 Emmys, which was postponed from September 2023 to January 2024 due to the actors and writers strike.

She was up for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for Dead to Me, which ultimately went to Abbott Elementary's Quinta Brunson.
