Over the past year, the comedian has pivoted towards political commentary.
While Hughes has made headlines for largely criticising the federal and state Labour governments, he said his latest health ordeal put life into perspective.

He overlaid his video with the text: “Where there’s life, there’s hope … among the madness, remember this.”
In May 2026, Hughes emerged in bandages after having fie skin cancers removed.

The clip showed Hughes shirtless with bandages on his chest, back and both arms, preparing to drive to his show in Cowes, Victoria.

The comedian captioned the video: “What’s 45 stitches between friends? The Big V erases the pain.”
Hughes has had plenty of encounters with skin cancer before the two scares in 2026.
The comedian has previously undergone surgery, including in 2016 and 2020, to remove them.
"I got my skin checked and had a couple of cancers cut out," he told the Herald-Sun in 2020 following the second procedure.

“There were parts that had to be sliced and diced, but I’m all good.
“My skin is not meant for this climate, I always joke I should be in Ireland picking potatoes.
“My wife [Holly] is always is banging on to me about getting my skin checked. She wants to keep me alive, which is nice.”
