Chris Martin apologises to Melbourne as Coldplay performs for the 'first time ever' without whole band

Coldplay kicked off their Aussie tour last night, performing for the "first time ever" without all four members.

Before their first Melbourne show began on Wednesday night, Chris Martin came out on stage early to announce their bassist Guy Berryman wouldn't be performing.

In fan-captured footage posted to TikTok, the Coldplay frontman shared Berryman had to pull out of the gig at Marvel Stadium over health issues.

"It's a shame, but we waited until the last-minute to tell you that our beautiful bass player Guy is very, very sick," Martin told the crowd.

Martin said they would be performing without Berryman "for the first time".

The singer later confirmed on Instagram after the show it was the first performance in the band's history without all four of the members on stage.

The British rock band, formed in 1997, stars Martin, Berryman, Will Champion on drums and guitarist Jonny Buckland.

"I'm sorry for all you guys down here who have waited to see Guy, he's not going to be able to play today," the singer apologised to the thousands of Aussie fans.

Martin said their first Aussie concert would be a "slightly different show" than expected, but the band would do their "best to make it amazing".

"I know that it will be amazing because we're in Melbourne with all of you beautiful people," he said to cheers from the crowd.

"However, if you see some mistakes and some problems it's because we don't have our bass player and we only had about an hour to figure it out."

Martin said that in place of Berryman they had a "strange alien" character on stage, looking like he's playing the bass guitar.

"So you'll hear Guy but you just won't see him because he's vomiting," he explained.

The Yellow singer then asked the crowd to forget they saw him come out on stage early.

"This is not the show yet, this is the pre-show. I'm so happy to see you," he said.

"We really would love to have all of your energy to make it one big band and we'll feel like the best concert ever without a great bass player," he concluded.

October 30 was the first of four shows the band will play in Melbourne.

Coldplay will then continue their Aussie tour with four shows at Sydney's Accor Stadium.

Ahead of their first Melbourne show, Martin surprised Aussie fans with a special rendition of the Neighbours theme song to mark their arrival Down Under.
