Celeste Barber loses her voice as she suffers from mystery illness that could affect her work

Australian comedian and media personality Celeste Barber has revealed her work commitments have been threatened by a mystery illness, which has resulted in her losing her voice.

Sounding hoarse as she addressed her almost nine million-strong following on her Instagram Story on Monday evening, the 39-year-old Back to the Outback star sarcastically joked about her croaky voice.

"This voice is fine, isn't it? This voice is totally fine," she said in the video. Watch above.

Barber then revealed that the next day — today — she had to "shoot eight scenes" and was unsure if she could go through with it due to her condition.

It was not revealed what illness her symptoms were a sign of, however in an Instagram Story shared in the early hours of this morning, Barber can be seen donning a face mask.

"Grateful," she wrote alongside the image, which included a timestamp of 4.34am.

It is unclear exactly what project Barber is shooting scenes for, though late last year, it was announced that she was to headline a dramatic comedy series titled Wellmania, which has been ordered by Netflix.

Most recently, Barber lent her voice to the character of Skylar in 2021's Australian-American adventure comedy Back to the Outback, which also starred Isla Fisher.

Barber is also set to tour North America with her Fine, Thanks stand-up comedy show, which starts in July.

The revelation that Barber has lost her voice comes after she recreated United States influencer Alexis Ren's topless Playboy bunny-themed photoshoot for Easter, which she paired with the tongue-in-cheek caption, "Happy Easter. Religion is weird."

Actress Sharon Stone was one of many who appreciated it, writing, "Hilarious 👏🔥👏🔥👏"

Chelsea Handler, meanwhile, simply commented, "#Coachella"
