'None that I can say here!' Renée Zellweger's cheeky quip about reunion with Hugh Grant in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

The 2025 release of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is something fans have been waiting for.

The latest instalment in the franchise sees Renée Zellweger reprise her role as charming TV producer Bridget Jones, but this time as a widow and mother of two overcoming the tragic death of her husband and love of her life, human rights lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).

The film comes five years after 2016's Bridget Jones's Baby, and it's equally special for fans, with Hugh Grant reprising his role as the charming lothario Daniel Cleaver for the first time in 21 years.

He last appeared in the franchise in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason back in 2004.

Talking to 9honey at the Australian premiere of Mad About the Boy about the on-screen reunion with Grant, Zellweger, 55, says she's "so happy" her co-star is back on screen with her.

When asked if there were any memorable behind-the-scenes moments with Grant, 64, that she could share, she hilariously quipped, "None that I can say here!"

"No, he's wonderful, I'm so happy he's back, I love working with Hugh and who doesn't love Daniel Cleaver. Yay!" she added with a laugh.

Also speaking with 9honey Celebrity, director Michael Morris addressed the controversial plot twist in the film and Helen Fielding's book of the same name: Mark Darcy's death.

Morris says he understands why fans would be rather upset with the character dying, as Darcy and Jones are "such an iconic screen couple".

"I respect fans for having those feelings, by the way. I am a fan of the franchise as well as making this, and I think I would share those feelings," he tells 9honey.

"Those feelings are exactly why, one of the reasons I wanted to make this film.

"They're such an iconic screen couple, if you're going to tell the story in part about grief and moving on from a terrible loss, the audience is going to feel that loss with Mark Darcy dying."

Morris said he and the crew tried to "honour" Darcy with the latest instalment.

"Mark Darcy may not be alive in the film, but his presence is felt and his character is very important in the experience of this film and we honour him I hope," Morris says.

But speaking about Bridget's love interests in the films, he adds: "I'm really excited Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall are in the film, as it's a whole new approach with love interests."

Sally Phillips, who portrays Bridget's best friend Shazzer, spoke about her iconic role as she graced the red carpet at the premiere and how much her beloved character swears in the film.

Speaking about whether it was hard to get out of character and not swear off-set, she joked, "I think swearing is like weeds or whatever, you can let it grow up and some weeds are very beautiful!"

"And so it's more like, it wasn't really character, I did swear a lot more while I was playing Shaz. Then I go and do the weeding, I've got three boys, do the weeding, try and cut it out for a bit, but it's fun isn't it?

"And they've done research into it and apparently people who swear are more intelligent, which means Australians are the most intelligent people in the world!"

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy opens in Australian cinemas on February 12.
