20 years on: Remembering the celebrity moments that defined 2005
In not-at-all-alarming news, 2005 is now 20 years ago. Yeah, that's 20 years as in two decades.
If your memory's a little rusty, allow us to remind you of the fact 2005 was also a huge year in celebrity news.
From the rise of 'Brangelina' and Tom Cruise leaping on Oprah's couch to Bec Cartwright and Lleyton Hewitt saying "I do", it was a year of dramatic headlines.
Let's jump in the time machine and take a look back, shall we?
Jude Law's apology to Sienna Miller over cheating scandal
One of the biggest relationship stories to dominate headlines in 2005 was Jude Law's cheating scandal.
At the time, the actor was engaged to Sienna Miller, whom he'd met on the set of the film Alfie.
The couple – two of the biggest stars of the moment – had become engaged on Christmas Day in 2004, but controversy was only months away.
In early 2005, news broke that Law had cheated on Miller and slept with Daisy Wright, the nanny of his three children from his previous marriage to Sadie Frost.
After Frost confronted Daisy about the affair and fired her from the position, Daisy went to the press and revealed all about her relationship with Law.
The actor ultimately apologised to Miller in a public statement.
"I just want to say I am deeply ashamed and upset that I've hurt Sienna and the people most close to us," Law said.
"I want to publicly apologise to Sienna and our respective families for the pain that I have caused.
"There is no defence for my actions which I sincerely regret and I ask that you respect our privacy at this very difficult time."
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston split
January 2005 brought the news nobody saw coming: Hollywood's golden couple had split.
After seven years together, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt announced their decision to separate, saying they would "remain committed and caring friends".
"For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media," the joint statement from the actors read.
"This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration."
Aniston filed for divorce two months later in March 2005.
It all sounds rather cut and dry when you put it like that, but for months, rumours of something else at play had been swirling...
'Brangelina' is born
Pitt met Angelina Jolie in 2004 on the set of their spy film Mr and Mrs Smith.
It didn't take long for speculation on the nature of their relationship to kick off; while they denied anything was happening at the time, the stars later admitted they "fell in love" during filming.
In July 2005, Pitt and Jolie made it official in the most Hollywood way possible: with a magazine spread titled 'Domestic Bliss'.
This sparked enormous controversy, and a very 2005 media narrative of 'Team Jolie vs Team Aniston' – complete with t-shirts you could buy to pledge your allegiance – was born.
(Conveniently, Pitt's role in the saga – as the married man at the centre of it – was largely ignored!)
Even Aniston weighed in, saying a "sensitivity chip" had been missing in regards to the publication of the magazine spread, which featured photos of Pitt and Jolie as a happy couple.
"I can't say it was one of the highlights of my year," the Friends star admitted in an interview later that year.
"Who would deal with that and say, 'Isn't that sweet! That looks like fun!'? But ... you joke and say, 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.'
"I would much rather everyone move on. I am not defined by this relationship."
In late 2005, Jolie adopted daughter Zahara (pictured with Pitt) from Ethiopia; Pitt accompanied her on the second trip to the country to make the adoption official.
Just six months later, in January 2006 – a year after Pitt's split from Aniston was confirmed – the couple announced they were expecting their first child together.
Pitt also adopted Zahara and Maddox, Jolie's adopted son, that year.
This year, two decades on from their romance making headlines, the couple has finalised their acrimonious divorce after eight years.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes debut romance
2005 was a big year in celebrity romances. Case in point: the rise of TomKat.
In April, Tom Cruise – who'd previously been married to Aussie icon Nicole Kidman – was spotted in Rome with Dawson's Creek sweetheart Katie Holmes. Two days later, they made it red carpet-official.
To say things moved fast would be the understatement of the century.
By June, the couple – pictured at a War of the Worlds screening that month – confirmed they were engaged.
In October came the news they were expecting their first child, with daughter Suri arriving six months later in April 2006.
But the weirdest part of this chapter in celebrity relationship lore came weeks before the engagement...
Tom Cruise jumps on Oprah's couch
The moment needs no introduction.
Appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show, the actor was supposed to be promoting his latest movie, but the conversation quickly detoured to his new romance.
Minutes into the interview, Cruise began to gush about Holmes, barely able to contain his passion and excitement. He couldn't stop laughing as he darted around the room.
A bemused Winfrey could only utter this sentence: "Something happened to you."
"I'm in love!" Cruise proclaimed, before embarking on a series of physical displays of pure euphoria.
"She's truly extraordinary."
The actor then launched himself onto Winfrey's couch, creating an immortal moment in pop culture.
A new chapter for Nicole Kidman
While her ex-husband Tom Cruise was leaping on couches, Nicole Kidman was enjoying a new love story of her own.
In January 2005, the Aussie actress joined a bunch of homegrown talent at the annual G'Day USA gala – then called G'Day LA.
