Ashley Judd has opened up about the ordeal she endured while hiking through a jungle in the Republic of the Congo last year.

Speaking on the Sex, Body & Soul podcast, the actress reflected on the accident that saw her break her leg in four places while on a humanitarian mission back in February 2021.

"I don't know how the mind and the body and the soul come together to manage to endure the unendurable," she told podcast host Kate Roberts. "I bit a stick, I screamed, I howled, I convulsed. I never did pass out — I wished that I could."

Judd recalled lying on the jungle floor for five hours before she was rescued. She then remembered someone reset her bones before she was placed in a hammock and carried "up and over hills, through the river" back to her camp.

From there, she was then transported on the back of a motorcycle for six hours before being flown to the hospital. The entire rescue mission took a total of 55 hours.

"It showed me that all the work I've done in the development of my meditation process and how hard I've tried to heal, that that really was with me throughout those 55 hours," she explained of how she survived the immense pain.

"And this doesn't make me good right and perfect, and I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but there was a certain grace that stayed with me."

Ashley Judd has starred in movies such as Double Jeopardy, Divergent and Kiss the Girls.

The Double Jeopardy actress said she was rescued just in time as she was losing a lot of blood following the accident.

"I was in hospital in South Africa about nine days. And then I was medevaced to Tennessee," she remembered. "But when I got to South Africa my leg didn't have a pulse and I was hemorrhaging, and if I had been medevaced to Europe I would've bled to death."
