Unbelievable results as couple transform abandoned 1860s chapel into a luxury family home on Derelict Rescue
Renovating an old home is one thing, but not many couples have the skillset to turn an abandoned 1860s chapel into a luxury family home.
In an episode of Derelict Rescue – which you can stream for free on 9Now – Chris, a decorator, and his wife Marisa, an interior design enthusiast, gave a former Methodist chapel a transformation of biblical proportions.

"I happened to be driving past one day and I saw the 'For Sale' sign and thought – this could be a project for me," Chris said.
After Chris and Marisa purchased the old chapel for £175,000 (AU$331,140) they embarked on a 22-month journey to transform the derelict building it into a family home.

While Marisa handled the design element of the home, Chris and his builder dad Mick took on the mammoth construction task.
They had big plans for the chapel which was built in 1866 and used as a place of worship until the 1930s.
Chris and Marisa hoped to give it a new lease on life by adding a second floor and an extension.

Despite the chapel being abandoned for decades and left with rotten beams and gutted interiors, Mick couldn't help but appreciate some of the signs of old-school workmanship.
"The quality of workmanship is a lot better than today, the materials they used like oak for the trusses I just think it's built to a better standard," Mick noticed.
"The workman were more conscientious, everything's just power tools now, back then it was hand done only once so you had to do it right."

With Chris, Marisa and Mick all still working their regular day jobs too, it took them almost two years to complete the renovations.

"We started off with an empty shell and tried to maintain what was left of that original character," Marisa told cameras.
"It's been completely modernised and repurposed and it's made a lovely family home," Chris added.

Despite their original plans to keep the home for themselves, Chris and Marisa contemplated selling it as it would be a "great financial decision".
"With house prices being what they are, it's worth a lot more than we originally anticipated," Marisa admitted.
Chris estimated the restored chapel's value to now be £500,000 (AU$946,115) – what a profit!
