A US Secret Service officer who was shot at the White House Correspondents' Dinner has been released from hospital.

The update came from US Secret Service chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi, CNN says.

He did not name the officer nor the hospital, but said the ballistic vest the agent was wearing "helped us avoid a potential tragedy".

Earlier President Donald Trump said he had spoken with the officer, telling reporters at the White House, "He has very high spirits, and we told him we love him and respect him. And he's a very proud guy. He's very proud of what he does."

FBI agents have gathered outside a home linked to Allen in Torrance, a Los Angeles suburb.

That's where the shooter, Cole Tomas Allen, 31, a part time teacher, is from, authorities have said.

Police tape was put up along part of the street and a spotlight was shone on the home, CNN reports.

A number of reporters were gathered at the scene and news helicopters were hovering overhead.

A next-door neighbour, who did not wish to be identified, told CNN he was not sure if Allen lived at the property.

They said they did not see him often, but he was there "a couple of days ago."

The neighbour said the suspected gunman's father is friendly and chatty, adding that they spoke frequently.

How did the shooter get through security?

Security for the annual event is always tight when the president attends, especially given the venue's history.

As reported earlier, 45 years ago, the Washington Hilton was the site of an attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan and law enforcement argued that their "multi-layered protection" worked as designed.

Interim police chief for Washington's Metropolitan Police Department, Jeffery Carroll, told reporters investigators believe the suspect was staying in the hotel, which appears to be how he entered.

The hotel closed to the public starting at 2pm on Saturday in anticipation of the 8pm dinner.

Access to the hotel was restricted to hotel guests, people with tickets, an invitation to one of the receptions held at the hotel before or after, or documents from the White House Correspondents' Association.

The 2,300 guests at the event in the hotel's subterranean ballroom had to pass through several additional checks to enter the room.

That included showing tickets to volunteers and hotel staff and passing through magnetometers manned by the Secret Service and Transportation Security Administration.

Security camera footage released by Trump to social media shows the gunman running past security officers who appear to be disassembling the metal detectors.

Once the president was seated, additional attendees could not enter.

"It shows that our multi-layered protection works," Secret Service director Sean Curran said.

His comments were echoed by Carroll, who said the security plan for the evening was developed by the Secret Service and "that security plan did work this evening."

Inside the ballroom there were further security measures.

The US Secret Service maintained another perimeter around the president that included a buffer separating him and others seated at the head table from the rest of the attendees.

Armored plates were hidden under the table where Trump was seated.

Secret Service agents were at their posts in front of the stage and in its wings, as were heavily armed counter-assault agents ready to respond to threats.

The leaders of Mexico and Venezuela condemned today's shooting, stating that violence is never the answer.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed relief that US President Donald Trump and his wife, first lady Melania Trump, are safe, CNN says.

Venezuela's Acting President Delcy Rodríguez said on X: "Violence is never an option for those who uphold the values of peace."

"We strongly condemn the attempted attack against President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania Trump. We extend our best wishes to them and to all attendees of the Correspondent's Dinner," Rodríguez said.

Moment president and VP taken to safety

Footage of the moment the US Vice President and President were ushered out of danger has emerged.

A video shows JD Vance being grabbed from behind by a suited man and ushered quickly off the stage.

Then two other men in suits can be seen taking one arm each of President Trump, as an armed officer runs past.

He lowers down to the floor as they help him walk off, with a third officer also linking arms to help them.

He's taken off to the side of the stage behind a curtain.

More armed guards are seen running around, as plates and glasses smash in the background.

Trump was held for some time in the secure presidential suite at the hotel as the president and organisers initially sought to resume the event.

More leaders are reacting to the shooting.
