A mail-bomb scare began in the US on October 22, 2018, when a pipe bomb was sent to the New York home of billionaire philanthropist George Soros.

Over the coming days more suspicious packages containing crudely made explosive devices were posted to the homes of prominent supporters of the Democratic Party.

They included Hollywood actor Robert De Niro and former president Barack Obama, as well as media outlet CNN.

Just a few days after the first pipe bomb was mailed, Cesar Sayoc, an amateur body builder and former stripper was arrested and accused of sending at least 13 of them to prominent figures and organisations.

The FBI said investigators were aided by misspellings from his online posts, which were found to match mistakes found on the packages.

Sayoc was later sentenced to 20 years in prison.
