Experience

Since 2016, Richard has delivered breaking news, deep‑dive features and live coverage for Nine, known for his sharp sourcing, forensic research and ability to untangle complex geopolitical events. From the US–Iran standoff to the birth of AUKUS and China’s growing power in the region, he brings clarity and context to some of the most consequential issues of our time.

His journalism career began in the regional papers of northern England before he crossed the globe to Australia. He went on to report for The Sydney Morning Herald — contributing to a Walkley Award‑winning team — and later sharpened his editorial craft at News Corporation as a digital and print sub‑editor.

Education

Richard attended the University of Swansea in Wales and graduated with Bachelor of Arts (Honours) specialising in History. He later completed a diploma in journalism from the UK National Council for the Training of Journalists. During his career he has undergone training courses, such as feature writing, interviewing and video editing.

Awards and Recognition

Richard was part of The Sydney Morning Herald digital team that earned a Walkley Award for their coverage of the 2000 Olympic Games, earning praise for insightful story telling, breaking news stories and impactful graphics and pictorial content. His clear and unbiased reporting of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 earned him the ire of the Kremlin when he was among a group of Australian journalists banned from entering Russia.
