Today in History - June 2 : Shoplifting arrests reveal house of horrors
A murder spree in California by two serial killers was brought to an end on June 2, 1985, when they were arrested for shoplifting.
After Charles Ng, and accomplice Leonard Lake were arrested, police found bullets and a silencer in their car and took them in for questioning.
The former US Marines admitted they'd lured their victims, largely young women, to a remote cabin in San Francisco, where they were held captive and later killed.
Lake killed himself in police custody with a cyanide pill.
But Ng managed to escape to Canada where he remained for six years successfully avoiding extradition.
He was eventually deported to the US in the late 1990s, where he was convicted for the murders of 11 people.
American swimmer and actor Johnny Weissmuller who became the first 'Tarzan' actor was born on June 2, 1904 in Romania.
After his family migrated to the US, he became a swimming superstar, winning three gold medals at the 1924 Olympics in Paris.
But his virile looks also caught the eye of film producers who cast him as 'Tarzan', the fictional literary and film character who was raised by apes in the African jungle.
US domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh on June 2, 1997, was found guilty of the Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people.
A former decorated American soldier, McVeigh drifted into a far-right militia movement after leaving the US Army.
In April 1995, he detonated a massive fertiliser bomb outside a US federal government office.
McVeigh was executed in 2001.
On June 2, 1909, Alfred Deakin became Australian Prime Minister for the third time and formed the first majority federal government in the country's history.
Deakin was able to negotiate a deal between the three non-Labor political groups in the House of Representatives to establish the new Commonwealth Liberal Party.
On June 2, 1969, the Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne accidentally sliced through an American destroyer, killing 74 sailors in a disastrous exercise during the Vietnam War.
