Man bitten by shark at popular surf beach off WA coast

A man has been bitten by a shark while surfing at a beach on Western Australia’s Mid-West coast.
Emergency services were called to Glenfield Beach in Geraldton, 430 kilometres north of Perth, about 9.50am (11.50am AEST) following reports of a shark attack.

A spokesperson for St. John Ambulance confirmed a man in his 50s was taken to Geraldton Hospital as a “priority one” emergency.
He arrived at hospital about 10.30am.
A spokesperson for WA Country Health said the man is in a serious but stable condition.
The state’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) confirmed it is investigating a shark incident at Glenfield Beach following reports a male surfer had been bitten by a shark.
Authorities have urged swimmers in the area to take extra caution.

The City of Greater Geraldton confirmed it has temporarily closed a portion of Glenfield Beach, south of the intersection of Glenfield Beach Drive and Surfside Terrace, following the incident.
“To ensure community safety all recreational water users are advised to avoid the area as the shark may still be in the vicinity,” the council said in a statement.
The DPIRD said it is working with local authorities to coordinate a response to the suspected attack.
