Ready, set, slow! 2018 snail racing champion crowned

The 2018 snail racing championship happened and a snail named Hosta has won first place.

Hosta’s owner, Jo Waterfield, told the organisers “he spent all summer eating my Hosta’s. I told him if he didn’t win I’d squash him.”

A total of 180 snails competed in this year’s race and 11 made it to the finals.

“I’m always really disappointed if I miss it. We always make sure we stay in England so we don’t miss the championships,” one eager fan told Ruptly TV.

“It’s a fantastic sport. Anyone can enter it,” snail trainer Neil Riseborough said.

The races have been held for more than 25 years in Norfolk, UK.

An entrant just needs to select a snail from their garden and a numbered sticker is placed on their back to identify them.

They are then placed in a circle and must race 30-centimetres to the outside of the circle.

The first one to cross the red line is crowned the winner.
