'Linen is my life': Nine's Steven Jacobs launches new homewares line Sabi Linen

Nine's Steven Jacobs is taking his passion for linen and design to the next level with the launch of his new line, Sabi Linen.

"Linen is my life," Steve Jacobs tells 9Honey Homes. Watch the video above to hear Jacobs talk about the Sabi Linen range.

"I have always loved home decor," Jacobs says. "In fact, I caught up with my now-business partner 10 years ago for a coffee -- and she reminded me last year when we reconnected and decided to start the business -- that I spent the whole lunch talking about linen."

"Steve and I caught up over a cup of green tea and he was saying how linen was his life," recalls Emma Goody, Jacobs' business partner.

Goody is no newcomer to home decor, having created her own homewares line Emma Jay that she supplied to over 800 retailers.

"I'm an introvert, so I love nesting and love a beautiful environment," explains Goody.

The pair met at a Winnie The Pooh birthday party 17 years ago -- Goody was performing, and Jacobs was hosting. Shortly after, Jacobs approached her agent about working together for his own independent recording label, and they wrote songs together for two years.

Now, after their lives went in separate directions -- Jacobs working with the Today Show and Goody beginning her homewares and property styling careers -- the two reunite from Goodys' good idea.

"I said to him, 'I want to start a new brand, that completely polarising the mass produced, plastic shiny products that have become the norm. It's going to be all linen, earthy and grungy and hand-dyed - do it with me!" she tells 9Honey Homes.

After mulling it over, Jacobs was in.

The philosophy of Sabi comes from the Japanese aesthetic 'Wabi Sabi' explains Jacobs.

Wabi Sabi is about celebrating "the beauty in imperfection and rawness" and speaks to the organic, hand-stitched, hand-dyed and hand-crafted foundation to the range.

"We wanted to do a range of linen that was going to be tactile, authentic and raw -- very, very earthy," says Jacobs. "Every product is unique, you're really getting one-of-a-kind."

Goody reiterates the point, saying, "we are now working with artisan dyers in India on our fabric. It's all designed by us, we don't source it. We're offering a really different product."

Both Jacobs and Goody believe in natural, organic processes that veer away from mass production culture. Aligning on these philosophies paved the way for Sabi Linen to be born.

"It really polarises the mass production and mass consumerism we see today. It will be small runs of these beautiful, tactile, authentic, austere products that you'll really love and will be a talking point for people in their homes."

He says the quality of the linen is high and will last a long time, and that the colour palette is beautiful.
