A Manhattan studio with a "prime Chelsea location" has gone viral for all the wrong reasons.

If you want to live on your own, finding an apartment that fits your budget without being completely unlivable is a delicate dance.

One New York apartment is doing the rounds of the interwebs, for it is a perfect example of 'the struggle' many face.

Twitter user @AmericaCanceled shared three photos of a studio in Chelsea asking $2,250 (US$1600) rent per month.

The post has gone viral, with over 4000 retweets and 17,000 likes.

"At these prices I will never find an apartment in NYC," @AmericaCanceled commented on their own post.

According to the Street Easy listing, the "cozy" studio is located on a "quiet tree-lined street" in a "prime Chelsea Location."

The features (all two of them) are listed as hardwood floors and high ceilings.

The kitchen is in a cupboard.

Nice archway, tho. Twitter

Which did not go unnoticed on Twitter:

There is no storage, save for the two small overhead cabinets inside the kitchen cupboard.

The bathroom is separate, but equally compact (and dated):

You might note that there is no natural light source in the bathroom.

That's because the only window is in the main living/dining/bedroom area - above a radiator.

Anyone else having issues with the off-centre placement of the window? No? Twitter

"This should be illegal.. how can you charge someone $1600 for half of an apartment ? Lmaoo" @AmericaCanceled continues in the comments.

And oh, the comments. It's safe to say Twitter is outraged by the micro apartment. There is a lot of swearing in the thread. So much swearing.

People were not impressed with the bathroom - with many noting they hadn't bothered to clean it properly before taking the listing photos.

However, one Twitter user pointed out a, er, fun bonus.

Others likened it to a hallway or walk-in closet.

While many started comparing other areas in the US for value.

Surprisingly (unsurprisingly?), New Yorkers began defending the listing, saying Chelsea is a hot area and you're essentially paying for the location.

According to the New York Post, "the apartment is next to scene-y clubs like Tao Downtown, Gansevoort and Buddakan. And you’re only four blocks away from the nearest train station."

They also say the average cost of a studio apartment in Chelsea is US$2000 per month.
