Byron Bay's newest celebrity resident: Matt Damon

We've all gone on a blissful holiday and started idly browsing local real-estate listings.

Looks like celebs do it, too - only not so idly. Matt Damon is a frequent visitor to Byron Bay, most recently hanging out with A-list pal Chris Hemsworth and his family over New Year's Eve. 

Now rumour has it he's bought the house next door to his fellow actor.

Although real-estate agents are remaining tightlipped, it seems Bourne star Matt Damon is set to join Byron's glitterati. Newspaper reports credited an anonymous local real-estate agent for breaking the news, adding that the property was most likely bought in a private sale.

The only property near the Hemsworth family's Broken Head home that's listed as sold on the Byron Property Buyers site, which has been linked with the sale, is a luxury property with a pool. The sale price was not disclosed.  

Chris and his wife, Elsa Pataky, and their three kids are currently renting a home near their own property, which is undergoing extensive renovations priced at more than $8 million. They bought the place for $7 million in 2014.

Byron Bay is fast becoming Australia's celebrity hotspot. Chris's brother Liam and his fiancée Miley Cyrus are often spotted visiting their famous family. 

Other residents include Simon Baker and his wife of 20 years Rebecca Rigg (who are often visited by Naomi Watts, the godmother of one of the couple's children).

Olivia Newton John is another frequent visitor, thanks to owning the popular Gaia Retreat & Spa in nearby Newrybar. 

And it's not neglected by the model set, either, with Nicole Trunfio, Jessica Gomes and Rachael Finch all fans of the beachside town.

TV presenter Magdalena Roze and her husband, chef Darren Robertson, now call the area home, and Gemma Ward, Natalie Imbruglia and Isabel Lucas have all bought properties in the area in recent years.
